The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has had its ups and downs. However, one area in which they tend to excel is on the critic site Rotten Tomatoes. Even movies the public may not love, such as “The Marvels,” can score a “Fresh” rating of 62%. I loved “The Marvels,” and I think it was a good movie, albeit with a subpar villain. Now our attention turns to the latest entry into the “Captain America” franchise with “Captain America: Brave New World,” set to debut in theaters everywhere on Feb. 14. This time, it’s Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson) taking the shield and donning the stars and stripes. Joining him is Hollywood legend Harrison Ford (Thaddeus Ross), and I think I like where we’re headed.

Director History
Julius Onah is fairly new to the director’s chair. However, he does seem to have the chops, with three of his four films scoring in the “Fresh” range. Superheroes, blockbusters and mega-budgets are not exactly in his wheelhouse, but it hints that we may see a more grounded and artistic story than we might be expecting!
Overall, I think this choice of director leans in a positive direction. It’s certainly not a standing ovation yet, but Onah could become a household name with a hit on this project.
Cast Breakdown
Bringing back Mackie is a big plus, and adding Ford to the cast is a great decision. If there is an issue here, it’s that neither actor has been tearing it up in the Rotten Tomatoes department. While name recognition is nice, we need to ensure this does not become a “Look how many big names we have” situation.
Mackie’s last film, “Elevation,” was scored as “Rotten,” and that is a common theme for him in his non-“Avengers” films lately. Hopefully, this is a return to form for Mackie, who is as capable as anyone of delivering a great performance.

Plot Concept
“Following the election of Thaddeus Ross as the president of the United States, Sam Wilson finds himself at the center of an international incident and must work to stop the true masterminds behind it.” – TVLine
OK, it’s a solid concept and feels like a “Captain America” movie. The question is, how big are they going with it? I think staying more intimate would be better for this story. Give us the personal relationships and ground the characters in something we can feel. Otherwise, this could get out of hand very fast, which may well be the killer of any “Fresh” hopes.
Marketing & Buzz
Marketing and name recognition for Marvel is always strong. However, it is not always something to write home about, and that is the case here. Yes, there are plenty of previews, but there isn’t a ton of buzz for this film. Box-office-wise, that is a major concern. However, I do think that as it gets closer, we will see something cooler and more memorable. For now, though, I am calling the marketing and buzz a negative for the movie.
