“Survivor 50” Episode 2 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

Episode Recap

Camp Life

We start on the Vatu tribe, and Genevieve and Q are reeling from the loss of Kyle. Q says, “One of us will win it, bro,” potentially foreshadowing that one of the original Vatu members will win the season. Q also wants to bring Rizo into the alliance of him, Genevieve, Colby and Stephenie. The Vatu tribe focuses on camp life, and Aubry is seen rolling her eyes at the group. She states that figuring out the tribe is akin to “solving a Rubix cube.” She’s aware that she is in a precarious position on the tribe, yet is unsure how to approach it. Meanwhile, Rizo is not about the effort around camp. Colby brings him under his wing, and Rizo does contribute more to camp life than he did on “Survivor 49.”

Over at Cila, Christian has an untimely bowel movement. The rest of the tribe is grossed out, yet also finds it hilarious. Savannah still has not told a single person about her Block-A-Vote, yet the others assume she won something on her journey with Mike and Colby. Savannah says that she needs to “find her people.”

Reward Challenge

"Survivor 50" Episode 2 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

The tribes convene at the reward challenge, and many castaways are saddened to see that Kyle was medically evacuated for his Achilles injury. Kamila is deeply upset that he left the game, as the two of them worked closely together on “Survivor 48.”

There’s little time to mourn the fallen, though, as Coach wants to set the record straight about the “Fight For Supplies” with Ozzy and Q. He explains how Ozzy and Q made a deal not to take the key from each other, but he did not participate in said deal! Coach says that he’s “The same old Coach playing like he’s always been playing.” To which Ozzy retorts sarcastically, “He’s the same old Coach!”

For the reward challenge, the players are playing for camp supplies, including a fishing kit. In the challenge, players will climb a ladder, grab a club and smash a box to get a key. Players then swim and cross a balance beam to reach a mat. Once the players reach the mat, they will then have one final player collect rings to land on three different poles. The first tribe to land all three rings gets the big camp improvement kit, and the second tribe gets a smaller one.

Cila tribe redeems their immunity loss, and with a strong performance from Rick Devens on the ring toss, wins reward! Jonathan quickly collects the rings for Kalo, and Coach lands them for Kalo to pick up the smaller fishing kit. The Vatu tribe leaves with nothing, a deflating loss after losing Kyle to the medevac earlier that day.

Camp Life (cont.)

At Vatu, Genevieve is nervous about Aubry and is worried that someone on this tribe could have the Billie Eilish Boomerang idol. While Aubry is out in the woods, Genevieve, Rizo and Colby look through her bag, with Q as the lookout. Much to their chagrin, they are unable to find anything.

Over at the Kalo tribe, Jonathan and Coach go out fishing with the new fishing kit won in the reward challenge. Jonathan states that Coach is his closest ally and that he has developed a warmth towards him. While out fishing, Coach develops massive cramps in both legs and needs to be taken back to camp via the safety boat. Once he returns and recovers, Coach tells himself that he needs to play it cool and not overextend himself.

Chrissy is seen as the mother of the tribe, and her words are a bit grating to a few tribe members, specifically Dee and Charlie. Although an alliance with an older woman is Charlie’s “bread and butter,” even he’s tired of Chrissy. The way the edit portrays Chrissy, it seems like she would be an easy vote if Kalo attends tribal.

Now to Cila, where the conversations are much more game-centric. Ozzy and Cirie are still No. 1 allies, and Ozzy admits that his social game is not the strongest. At the water well, Ozzy pitches the idea of an Ozzy-Rick-Savannah-Joe alliance. However, there is distrust in the air between Rick and Joe. They have very different styles of gameplay and just general approaches to the game of “Survivor.”

The two of them hash it out openly on the beach after Joe catches whispering to Rick, and the entire tribe takes note. Joe preaches honor and integrity, while Rick is open to more deception in gameplay and anticipates it from his fellow castaways.

Next, Christian goes from the outhouse to the penthouse in the span of a day. He finds the Cila tribe’s Billie Eilish Boomerang idol, akin to what Genevieve found on Vatu. In a deliciously ironic turn of events, Christian decides to send it to Aubry, and she receives it just hours after Genevieve looked through her bag for it. This could be the catalyst that turns Aubry’s game around and a new relationship for Christian, who is already playing a strong game.

Immunity Challenge

"Survivor 50" Episode 2 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

The castaways compete for immunity, with the losing tribe going to tribal council. In the challenge, castaways will run into the jungle and retrieve a large, heavy snake. Once all three snakes are retrieved, the castaways will have to navigate a snake puzzle by navigating a ball into a hole. The first two tribes to do this will win immunity.

Jonathan and Kamila give Kalo a big lead to start, and Charlie and Mike help to extend that lead. Colby and Stephenie help to narrow the gap for Vatu. All three tribes reach the maze at similar times, and Cila begins to struggle on the maze. You can tell communication is not a strong suit for this group.

Vatu reaches the end first and wins immunity. Coach gets a bit frustrated with Kalo, but they end up beating Cila to the punch, sending Cila back to tribal council again.

Cila Camp

We return to the Cila camp, and Ozzy triumphantly states, “I will not be the third person going home on Season 50!” To further strengthen his bond with Cirie, he gives her his extra vote! This is the first time in five seasons of “Survivor” that Cirie has held an advantage! She has also managed to integrate well into the tribe, as she has strong relationships with both Rick and Christian.

She tries to nudge the vote towards Joe, as they are not winning challenges regardless of his strength. She also says that Ozzy’s social game is not very good, whereas Savannah could foreseeably form a coalition against them in the future. Cirie is open to a Savannah vote and would like to flush whatever she won on the journey.

Rick and Joe try to reconcile, but they struggle to get along. Like with Jenna, Joe is getting in the way, and people will need to play around him. Savannah thinks that Ozzy and Cirie are tight and need to be broken up, but also sees the merits in going for Joe. A plan emerges where Cirie, Emily, Savannah and Rick would vote for Joe. However, Christian and Joe have a cryptic conversation in the hammock where Christian hints to Joe that Savannah may be the vote.

Finally, Christian tells Rick about the idol, and that he sent it to Aubry on the other tribe! Christian still has the parchment tho, and so Rick wants to leverage that to hide a fake idol at tribal council.

Tribal Council

Cila arrives at tribal, and Jeff immediately asks about the confrontation between Joe and Rick. Joe says that they did argue, but were able to hash it out. Ozzy says the hardest part of this game is sifting through the information given. Savannah admits that she has had a wall up and was scared to be accepted into this tribe. Christian is looking for tribal solidarity from this vote.

The players vote, and no votes are shown. Savannah goes home in a 6-1 vote, with her sole vote cast for Ozzy.

Once tribal ends, Rick and Christian’s plan to hide the fake idol is put into effect! Christian sets a diversion by tripping and falling on the walkout from tribal. This allows Rick to sneak the idol out of his bag and hide it behind a rock next to the fire pit at tribal. Christian then pretends that he does not know where he is going as a further distraction to buy Rick time.

Survivor 50 Castaway Betting Odds

"Survivor 50" Episode 2 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

Each week, I’ll rank and pair the remaining “Survivor 50” castaways with betting odds to win the game. These odds are subject to change after each episode. When castaways are eliminated, edits become clearer. As a result, win equities will diverge, and odds will become more favorable to some and less favorable to others.

I have ranked players with a negative or limited edit with poorer odds. Cirie makes a big jump this week, as she is well-integrated into the tribe socially. I still don’t think she has the best chances to win this game, but I do think she will certainly have more longevity than I anticipated last week.

Tiffany and Angelina have been essentially non-existent in the edit. So even though their edits aren’t negative, I’ve given them very low odds, since a winner would get more screen time.

  1. Christian Hubicki (+650)
  2. Rick Devens (+850)
  3. Emily Flippen (+950)
  4. Colby Donaldson (+1250)
  5. Q Burdette (+1400)
  6. Mike White (+1500)
  7. Genevieve Mushalak (+1500)
  8. Benjamin “Coach” Wade (+1700)
  9. Aubry Bracco (+1850)
  10. Cirie Fields (+2000)
  11. Jonathan Young (+2000)
  12. Rizo Jelavic (+2200)
  13. Charlie Davis (+2500)
  14. Stephenie Lagrossa-Kendrick (+2700)
  15. Ozzy Lusth (+2800)
  16. Dee Valladeres (+3000)
  17. Kamilla Karthigesu (+3000)
  18. Joe Hunter (+3000)
  19. Angelina Keeley (+3500)
  20. Tiffany Ervin (+4000)
  21. Chrissy Hofbeck (+5000)

Top Five Baby!

“Top five, baby!” The phrase coined by the great Tony Vlachos in “Survivor Cagayan” rings true here and will throughout the season. The five most impactful castaways this episode and moving forward, in my eyes, are as follows:

Christian Hubicki

What can’t this man do? He’s the strategic center of his tribe, found an idol and helped hide a fake idol. Christian got his desired target out this round, and he managed to laugh off his unfortunate bowel movement. I trust he will find his footing again on a swap tribe, as he’s a desirable player to work with. I really hope he swaps with Aubry so she can find out that he sent her the Billie Eilish Boomerang idol. As of now, he’s my clear top winner contender.

Rick Devens

It was a complex episode for Rick. He argues with Joe but also has some fun character moments. Rick is Christian’s top ally, as Christian tells him about the idol he found. He then hides a fake idol at tribal, and considering how much time the episode dedicated to it, I feel like it has to come up later in the season. That likely means longevity for both Christian and Rick, who also have a strong relationship with Cirie.

Emily Flippen

Emily falls a bit below Rick and Christian. There isn’t as much of an emphasis on her, and we see her purely in a strategic light and less of a personal light. She keeps bringing up the idea of voting for Ozzy, so maybe that will occur in the near future. Considering her strategic positioning and lower threat level, she remains this high, and hopefully, she receives a strong swap.

Colby Donaldson

It was another solid episode for Colby. He is shown helping around camp, is in on the plan to look through Aubry’s bag and does well in the immunity challenge for the Vatu tribe. Even tho the relationship he formed with Savannah at the Journey does not pan out, the editors must have shown it to show that Colby is capable of making new relationships. I expect him to continue to do well at the swap next week.

Q

Q takes my final spot in the top five. He’s just such a fun presence this season, yet has also dialed it back. Had Vatu gone to tribal, I think Q would’ve definitely been safe. He still does not have a vote. Still, I think his fellow castaways will want to keep him around not only for his friendliness and charisma but also for his contributions in the challenges. The fact that he was able to assimilate so quickly into the majority despite missing a full day on exile is impressive, too.
