“Survivor 50” Episode 2 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

Episode Recap

Cila Camp

We start the episode on the Cila tribe, and Cirie asks Christian if he is OK following his “fall” at tribal council. Christian and Rick meet to rehash their plans with the idol. Christian wants Rick to claim that he found the idol, and for him to tell Emily and Cirie. They both also anticipate a swap, so they want to make sure to share this beforehand.

Rick tells Cirie the next morning, and Christian acts very surprised. He tells her he sent the idol to Aubry, which is plausible considering the two of them played on “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” the 38th season of the show. Cirie states in a confessional that she feels locked in with Rick. Rick and Christian try to tell Emily, but she is engaged in conversation with Joe, and they cannot get her away from camp.

Tribe Swap & Fallout

All three tribes meet on the mats, and Jeff announces that Savannah was voted out. Then, we get a moment of brilliance? Jeff Probst, the man, the myth, the legend, throws down some bars about “Survivor” in front of the castaways.

I am at a loss for words for how to describe this. Wendell Holland once said on “Survivor: Ghost Island,” “Put the mic down, you have no bars,” in his voting confessional for Chris Noble. I wouldn’t say Jeff has “no bars,” and he gets credit for trying, but this was fairly cringeworthy.

The players draw buffs for the swap, the swapped tribes are as follows:

  • Cila: Charlie, Cirie, Dee, Jonathan, Kamilla, Rick and Rizo
  • Kalo: Aubry, Chrissy, Coach, Colby, Genevieve, Joe and Tiffany
  • Vatu: Angelina, Christian, Emily, Mike, Ozzy, Q and Stephenie

New Cila is made up of four original Kalo, two original Cila and one original Vatu, Rizo. The new Kalo tribe is made up of three original Kalo and Vatu, plus one original Cila, Joe. New Vatu is made up of three original Cila, three original Vatu and one original Kalo, Mike.

The New Vatu also has all three returning players from “Survivor: David vs. Goliath.” Coach and Colby reconnect after playing in “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains” together.

Camp Life

"Survivor 50" Episode 3 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

Starting with the New Kalo tribe, Coach is a big fan of Joe. His commitment to honor and integrity is music to Coach’s ears. Colby seems open to working with Joe as well, potentially in a group of four with Coach and Chrissy. Coach mentions to Chrissy that she would have been in trouble had the original Kalo tribe gone to tribal council, and that she talks too much. Chrissy was really hurt by this and spoke to Genevieve and Aubry about it.

Genevieve hits the ground running with game talk on the New Kalo tribe. She asks Chrissy if she is “open for business” and quickly offers her allegiance to Chrissy, Joe and Coach. Genevieve also continues her warpath against Aubry, telling the entire tribe she wants Aubry gone. However, Tiffany tells Aubry that Genevieve is targeting her, thereby establishing a bond between them.

Over at the Cila camp, Rick and Cirie are worried about being viewed as a pair. Rizo said that he met Cirie at a casting call when he was 18, and Cirie jokingly acts like she remembers meeting him. Dee wants Cirie out, and Jonathan agrees, saying that Cirie cannot make the merge. Rizo tells Charlie about the Billie Eilish Boomerang idol and that Ozzy has one via Genevieve.

Charlie is apprehensive about Rizo, though, as he told the tribe that he voted for Savannah to win “Survivor 49” but that Sophi was his closest ally. Charlie lost “Survivor 46” by one vote because his closest ally (Maria) did not vote for him to win. This makes Charlie nervous about Rizo, as he does not want history to repeat itself.

Finally, to Vatu, Q still does not have a vote! He also confides to Ozzy that he and Genevieve sent him the idol, after Ozzy admits to having it. They further the bond they made at Exile Island following the Fight for Supplies. Emily says that she gets good vibes from Q and throws Christian under the bus to Ozzy and him, as Christian had scrambled on the mat before the swap to tell Emily that Aubry had an idol. This made Emily feel left out, as she wished Christian had told her earlier. Q proposes an alliance of four with Q, Stephenie, Ozzy and Emily, but Emily is unsure about the group.

Emily begins to get messy here. After leaking what Christian said to her on the mat to Q, Stephenie and Ozzy, she then reverses course and tells Christian that she leaked it, but that she does not trust Q or Stephenie! Then, she tells Angelina that Q and Stephenie were going to vote her out! Angelina says that Q and Stephenie told her on their original tribe that Rizo and Aubrey were the first two targets.

Somehow, Christian forgives Emily and says that he needs to trust her and needs her as a number.

Immunity Challenge

"Survivor 50" Episode 3 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

The tribes arrive at the field for the challenge, and today they are playing for both immunity and reward. The first two tribes to finish are immune, with the first-place tribe winning four chickens and the second-place tribe winning one. In the immunity challenge, players are blindfolded and must retrieve rings throughout the field, and then navigate the field to collect puzzle pieces and then solve a puzzle. One player, the caller, is not blindfolded. Christian is the caller for Vatu, Kamilla for Cila and Chrissy for Kalo.

Cila takes an early lead in the challenge, collecting all three rings and working well as a team. Vatu struggles a bit, as Q and Ozzy are unable to find their last ring. Cila reaches the puzzle first, followed by Kalo and then Vatu. Colby takes a hard hit to the head right before they reach the puzzle, but appears to be alright. Cila solves their puzzle first and quickly, winning immunity and the four chickens. Kalo and Vatu both struggle a bit on the puzzle, with Kalo finishing the puzzle second, sending Vatu to tribal council.

Vatu Camp

"Survivor 50" Episode 3 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

The Vatu tribe returns to camp. Ozzy, Emily and Christian are attending their third consecutive tribal council. Mike tells Q and Stephenie that he can’t vote against any of his former “Survivor: David vs. Goliath” tribe mates, and that he will be voting for Stephenie. Q and Stephenie tell him they’ll be writing down Angelina’s name. Stephenie is worried that the vote will be a 3-3 tie, as Q does not have a vote. She assumes that Ozzy, Emily and Stephenie will vote for Angelina. While Christian, Angelina and Mike will vote for her.

Mike, however, does not want to vote for Stephenie here. He prefers a Q vote. Christian agrees with him, as he views Q as chaotic. Angelina is worried about the vote, as she thinks Emily is a wild card, so understandably, she is nervous that her game could hinge on her.

Ozzy and Emily discuss the vote, and while Ozzy agrees that Q is chaotic, he prefers Angelina to go first to keep the tribe strong and to eliminate a strategic threat. Q continues trying to push his agenda and tells Mike he has an extra vote and that Mike should just vote for him instead of Stephanie! The editors did not expand much on this, but it’s an oddly brilliant plan. If Stephenie, Ozzy and Emily all vote together for Angelina, and Angelina, Christian, and Mike all vote for Q, it would be a 3-3 tie, with Angelina and Q not voting on the revote. However, Q does not have a vote to begin with! Thus, Stephenie, Ozzy, and Emily could win the revote 3-2.

Tribal Council

The Vatu tribe arrives at tribal council, and Jeff begins the questioning. Stephenie says that nobody likes uncertainty on “Survivor,” and every time she’s played, it’s been tougher to play the game. Angelina says she is a different version of herself than the first time she played. Mike asks himself why he came back, and that the highs you get from “Survivor” stem from how low the lows are. Ozzy mentions that people think he is a strong challenge competitor, but he’s been to every tribal here and also lost the Fight for Supplies.

When asked about the vote tonight, Q says it’s a test for the group, and somebody is going to pass, and somebody is going to fail. The players vote, and Q is voted out 5-1, with Stephenie voting for Angelina. Q takes it in stride, but Stephenie is distraught and is shown with her hands over her face following the vote.

Survivor 50 Castaway Betting Odds

"Survivor 50" Episode 3 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

Each week, I’ll rank and pair the remaining “Survivor 50” castaways with betting odds to win the game. These odds are subject to change after each episode. When castaways are eliminated, edits become clearer. As a result, win equities will diverge, and odds will become more favorable to some and less favorable to others.

I have ranked players with a negative or limited edit with poorer odds. I’ve leveled the playing field a bit this week, as some of the top contenders are more exposed now or have had a shaky episode. I’ve bumped Charlie’s odds up, as he continues to be present in the edit despite never attending tribal.

Kamilla drops to the lowest odds for me, as she continues to have very little visibility.  I’ve also bumped down Genevieve, as she is playing really hard. I believe she is the most likely casualty from a future Aubry idol play. Coach and Joe improve their odds a bit. I don’t think either is the strongest winner candidate, but this swap could give both longevity.

  1. Christian Hubicki (+700)
  2. Rick Devens (+900)
  3. Emily Flippen (+950)
  4. Colby Donaldson (+1100)
  5. Charlie Davis (+1300)
  6. Benjamin “Coach” Wade (+1500)
  7. Jonathan Young (+1600)
  8. Mike White (+1700)
  9. Aubry Bracco (+1850)
  10. Cirie Fields (+2000)
  11. Genevieve Mushalak (+2100)
  12. Rizo Jelavic (+2200)
  13. Ozzy Lusth (+2400)
  14. Joe Hunter (+2500)
  15. Dee Valladeres (+3000)
  16. Stephenie Lagrossa-Kendrick (+3000)
  17. Angelina Keeley (+3200)
  18. Tiffany Ervin (+3500)
  19. Chrissy Hofbeck (+4000)
  20. Kamilla Karthigesu (+4500)

Top Five Baby!

“Top five, baby!” The phrase coined by the great Tony Vlachos in “Survivor Cagayan” rings true here and will throughout the season. The five most impactful castaways this episode and moving forward, in my eyes, are as follows:

Christian Hubicki

Christian attends tribal again, but he finally appears volatile here. At this point last season, I had stronger odds for a few players, but I still think we haven’t seen a truly strong winner edit. This is why Christian is still my top contender, but only at +700. His game is overexposed, as he’s already shown his hand by working with his old “Survivor: David vs. Goliath” compatriots.

His relationship with Emily appears to be OK despite a small slip-up with the idol intel. He definitely has longevity and is still my top contender, but this is the first time we’ve seen weakness in Christian’s game.

Rick Devens

It was a quieter episode from Rick. He swaps with Cirie and wins his first-ever tribal immunity challenge on “Survivor!” His only content post swap is a conversation with Cirie, where they agree they could be on the bottom of the new tribe. Rick should be fine for the time being, but I would like to see him develop relationships outside Cirie on this swap tribe to be more confident in him odds-wise.

Emily Flippen

We are on the Emily Flippen roller coaster ride, and boy, is it fun! She leaks her distrust of Christian to Q and Stephenie, then goes back to Christian to vote Q out in the same episode! Her relationship with Ozzy strengthens, despite her tossing Ozzy’s name at both of their previous tribal councils on the Cila tribe. Basically, Emily is messy, but she is insulated! I think she still has significant longevity in this game.

Colby Donaldson

The Colby train keeps chugging along. He hasn’t attended tribal yet to solidify the bonds he’s made, so I can’t put him higher than this. Still, Colby is placed into a potential majority alliance on his new swap tribe. He’s seen building trust with Joe, Coach and Chrissy.

Chrissy seems to distrust Coach of anyone out of that group, so if it does not hold, Colby should still be safe with Coach taking the fall. In addition, he still has a strong relationship with Genevieve. Overall, it was a strong swap for Colby, and hopefully, he can attend a tribal and lock in a majority group to build trust with.

Charlie Davis

Welcome to the Top Five, Charlie! He’s yet to attend tribal, but has received a positive edit and is seen connecting with a myriad of players throughout the first three episodes. His story from “Survivor 46” is integrated into this episode, as are his plans to take out Rizo. I think this is a very comfortable swap for Charlie as well, so hopefully he can attend tribal soon and continue to build trust with his tribe.
