“Survivor 50” Episode 6 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

Episode Recap

Camp Life

The Vatu tribe returns to camp following the unanimous vote to remove Angelina from the island. Ozzy and Christian connect, and Ozzy returns Christian’s shot in the dark to him. To further the trust between the two of them, Ozzy lets Christian know that he has an idol. Christian is shocked, and is glad that he took Ozzy up on the deal before tribal. Ozzy says he wants to lock in with Emily and Christian going into the merge.

In the Cila tribe, Dee and Jonathan talk about the vote, and Dee thinks that Jonathan took it fairly well. They still want to work together, and Dee tells Jonathan that “they need each other.” Exactly what she told Rizo last episode! Jonathan mentions that this is his first time being blindsided on “Survivor,” and that he wants to play a loyal game again, but is willing to adapt.

Merge + Advantage Hunt

"Survivor 50" Episode 6 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

The three tribes congregate on one beach and have officially merged! However, there is no merge feast; 17 players on one beach is chaotic, and information starts spreading like wildfire. The whereabouts of two of the Billie Eilish Boomerang idols become common knowledge quickly, as both Ozzy and Aubry realize that everyone knows each one of them has an idol. This makes sense based on the context of the idols, as it was discussed by two separate groups to whom to send these respective idols.

Ozzy and Cirie reunite, and Cirie tells Ozzy about Rizo’s idol, as well as the fact that she told Rizo and only Rizo about the Extra Vote Ozzy gave to her. Genevieve does not tell Rizo that she sent an idol to him, as she wants it to be a secret if it somehow bounces back to her. Christian and Rick Devens reunite, and Christian calls Rick his closest ally, despite playing the entire game with Emily.

An advantage is up for grabs and is hidden somewhere on the island. The castaways search for it at length, and Ozzy ends up finding it, meaning he wins a trip to Exile Island for the night and must bring another castaway with him. Ozzy does not want to make waves, so he selects Rizo publicly, stating there is less to go off with him as his season, “Survivor 49,” has not aired yet.

Immunity Challenge + Blood Moon Twist

"Survivor 50" Episode 6 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

The remaining fifteen players arrive at the beach to compete for immunity. But first, there’s a twist. Jeff mentions how the fans voted to have twists this season, and he has a doozy for them today! A Blood Moon Twist, as Jeff calls it, which signifies dramatic change, or death. For the first time in “Survivor” history, three players will be voted out in one night. The fifteen players are randomly divided into three groups of five, with each group attending a separate tribal council. In addition, the players voted out this round will not make the jury. Since the players voted out here would take 15th-17th place, this means a jury of eleven with a Final 3 at the end.

The immunity challenge is simple: castaways must balance on progressively smaller footholds. The last player to drop from each group wins immunity, and the last player to drop overall wins a reward for their group. This reward is a “Survivor” classic and elicits a strong response from the group. The winners will receive a trip to the sanctuary, where they will be treated to the goodness of Applebee’s! The castaways are divided into the following groups for the Blood Moon Twist:

  • Cirie, Coach, Colby, Dee, Emily
  • Aubry, Christian, Genevieve, Joe, Rick
  • Chrissy, Jonathan, Kamilla, Stephenie, Tiffany

Dee wins immunity for her group, and Christian wins it for his. The third group lasts a bit longer on this challenge, with Stephenie, Chrissy, and Kamilla competing to win. Kamilla drops, and then Chrissy appears to give up and let Stephenie win immunity. Stephenie wins immunity for her group as well as a trip to the sanctuary to enjoy Applebee’s! The food on the reward looks delicious, but no game strategy is discussed.

Pre-Tribal Camp Life

Back at the Cila camp, Cirie, Coach, Colby, Dee and Emily arrive. Colby does not have a vote, and his foot appears to be getting worse. Coach wants Emily out, but approaches his conversation with Dee the wrong way. He relays information to her a day late, and so Dee questions him as to why he did not tell her earlier. Emily is open to voting Coach or Colby here, as she does not have a relationship with either. This is Emily and Dee’s first time on a tribe together in “Survivor 50,” but they played together in “Survivor 45.” Emily does prefer Coach here, as she thinks Colby could possibly be medically evacuated in the future. Colby pitches to Dee that he has more sway than Coach with some unknowns in the game, and that he can definitely vouch for Dee if she keeps him here.

In our next group, Genevieve is very nervous. She has a decent relationship with Joe from her swap tribe, but is at odds with Aubry, and has never been on a tribe with Christian or Rick until now. Genevieve pitches Rick to Christian, as she thinks taking Rick out would lower Christian’s threat level. There’s no love lost between Joe and Rick from the initial Cila tribe, and so this is an easy pitch to Joe. Christian does not want to vote Rick, and he gave Aubry an idol, so the three of them will decide the vote here. The argument for Joe is that he is very unlikely to have an advantage, as opposed to Genevieve, who everyone now knows sent an idol to Ozzy.

The reward winners return to camp, and Kamilla is confident in her group here. With Jonathan, Tiffany and Kamilla all close from the original Kalo tribe, the goal is to vote out Chrissy. Kamilla is nervous, however, considering Jonathan was left out of the Charlie vote. Chrissy and Kamilla have a heart-to-heart, and Chrissy says she will not take it personally if Kamilla votes for her. Chrissy assumes Kamilla and Tiffany will vote for her, but she doesn’t think she’s going home. Chrissy tells Jonathan that the two of them are cut from the same cloth and that he has her complete trust. She tells him that Kamilla and Tiffany are using him. Jonathan worries that since he is in the middle here, there is no easy way out.

Tribal Council

"Survivor 50" Episode 6 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

Our reward winners head to tribal, and Tiffany and Chrissy get fire and light their torches, as this is their first tribal of the season. Tiffany says that she always keeps it real, and that’s her vibe at tribal. Kamilla says the goal of tribal is to find a group to navigate this massive merge with. Jonathan exclaims that “it’s a great time to draw a line in the sand and figure out where people stand.” The players vote, and Kamilla goes home 3-2, with Chrissy receiving two votes.

Our next group comes in, and we get the Genevieve show. She’s clearly nervous here, and when asked a question about the jury at tribal, she replies that “I’m just trying to survive,” and that “I think a lot of people are writing down Genevieve tonight.” When Genevieve hits the voting booth, she pulls out her Shot in the Dark and questions whether there’s a greater than one in six chance she can trust Christian here. Jeff gathers the votes, and Genevieve indeed plays her Shot in the Dark. The result is… Not Safe, and Genevieve goes home 4-0 in a unanimous vote. Genevieve found two idols this season and had strong connections from her original Vatu tribe, so had she made it through this tribal, I truly think she would have been in a strong spot moving forward.

Finally, the last group arrives at tribal. The mood is set with both the tone and the music added by the narrators; clearly, we are going to lose a big name here. Colby mentions that he is an easy target, as he has a bum foot and does not have a vote. Without a vote, he is unable to play his Shot in the Dark. He also mentions that this is the most fun he’s ever had playing “Survivor.” The players vote, and Colby is voted out unanimously. He gives Coach and Cirie a hug on the way out and limps out of tribal. I do think it’s possible that Colby asked to be voted out due to his injury, as Coach played this round messy and is a more threatening player in this game. That being said, Colby is such a legend of “Survivor” that it was just great to see him back and doing so well up until the Blood Moon twist.

Survivor 50 Castaway Betting Odds

"Survivor 50" Episode 6 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

Each week, I’ll rank and pair the remaining “Survivor 50” castaways with betting odds to win the game. These odds are subject to change after each episode. When castaways are eliminated, edits become clearer. As a result, win equities will diverge, and odds will become more favorable to some and less favorable to others.

I have ranked players with a negative or limited edit with poorer odds, so despite Chrissy’s move here against Kamilla, I still cannot rank her highly. Coach drops out of my Top Five, as he is seen as predictable and messy. Dee jumps up significantly, as her ability to make new allies is impressive. I also drop Rick a bit here, as outside of his relationship with Christian, his edit isn’t very fleshed out. I would like to see his relationships with Emily, Cirie and others highlighted more before I put him in my Top Five.

  1. Christian Hubicki (+450)
  2. Rizo Velovic (+600)
  3. Cirie Fields (+800)
  4. Emily Flippen (+950)
  5. Dee Valladeres (+1100)
  6. Benjamin “Coach” Wade (+1200)
  7. Rick Devens +1250)
  8. Jonathan Young (+1400)
  9. Aubry Bracco (+1500)
  10. Ozzy Lusth (+1700)
  11. Stephenie LaGrossa-Kendrick (+2200)
  12. Joe Hunter (+2500)
  13. Chrissy Hofbeck (+3000)
  14. Tiffany Ervin (+3200)

Top Five Baby!

“Top five, baby!” The phrase coined by the great Tony Vlachos in “Survivor Cagayan” rings true here and will throughout the season. The five most impactful castaways this episode and moving forward, in my eyes, are as follows:

Christian Hubicki

Christian continues his streak atop the Top Five and in our winner odds. He executes a move against Genevieve, furthers trust with Aubry and knocks out a player that would have been very dangerous moving forward. I think Christian is in a really good spot, for now. I could see a coalition of newer-school players coming together to try and knock out players like Coach, Chrissy, Stephanie and Joe. Those players going would benefit Christian, and can buy him time and let him sit back and stop driving the bus for a bit. Christian is also reunited with his top ally, Rick Devens, and executed unanimous votes twice in a row following the messy Q and Mike White votes. I feel confident with him as my top contender here.

Rizo Velovic

Rizo gets sent to Exile Island this round, yet still plays an important part in the episode. His idol is the best-kept secret on the island, as Genevieve didn’t share that she sent it to him. Only Cirie and Ozzy know about it. Rizo forms a bond with Ozzy here and is still connected to Dee and Tiffany, so he should have significant longevity in this game. Losing Colby and Genevieve is a bit of a hit for Rizo, but now he will not come off as so connected or threatening. Going to Exile and missing a contentious vote was really good for Rizo’s game, and I’m certain he will be able to slide into a majority group moving into the merge.

Cirie Fields

It was a strong episode from Cirie, voting out Colby, whom she was not connected to in the slightest. She has also shown to the new school players that she is willing to play ball with them. Cirie has a confessional this episode where she states that “new school players can vote with their enemy for a few votes and then vote them out.” I believe this demonstrates Cirie is going to play a flexible game, like she always has. She does not appear to be on anyone’s radar, plus she’s tight with Ozzy and Rizo and connected to Dee, Rick, Christian and Emily. I think we can expect a deep run from Cirie here, but the only question is, can she seal the deal?

Emily Flippen

Emily slides back into the Top Five, as Coach falls out due to messy gameplay and Colby is voted out. Emily was highlighted earlier on as playing a messy game, but she has corrected that in the past few episodes. She formed a bond with Dee here, her fellow “Survivor 45” castaway, and took out Colby, whom she was not connected to in the slightest. She also clocked Coach for playing too hard. Emily does not have the strong connections that Christian has, but is still fairly well-connected. I am curious if she will be able to connect with Cirie and Rizo the way Ozzy has, as that would further insulate her.

Dee Valladeres

Welcome to the Top Five, Dee! Dee’s edit has picked up lately, and she comes into the merge in a really good spot. She executed a move with Rizo against Charlie, yet still manages to maintain her relationship with Jonathan. She does lose Kamilla here, but gained trust with Cirie and Emily by voting out Colby. Her connection to Rizo is a valuable one, and I am curious if or when Rizo will tell Dee he has the idol. Dee keeps telling other players that “we need each other” in this game; I am curious how much that is true, and if it will eventually catch up to her. She’s playing a strong game though, and is the last remaining winner on the cast.
