It’s “Loser Month” on our new show “The Superlatives” and this week we’re watching The Dink! The Dink is Apple TV’s answer to Dodgeball, except this time the sport is pickleball, and the guy trying to save his family’s tennis club realizes halfway through that he’s rooting for the wrong side. We just watched it and we’ve got a lot of thoughts on whether Jake Johnson’s charm is enough to carry it.
We’re breaking down Dusty Boyd’s whole arc, from washed-up tennis prodigy still living off past glory to his unlikely pickleball redemption, his complicated relationship with his father Chuck, and yes, the surprisingly sweet and surprisingly weird chemistry with Mary Steenburgen’s character. We’re also getting into the stacked supporting cast, the Ben Stiller and Andy Roddick cameos, and whether the movie actually has anything to say about pickleball or just uses it as a backdrop for a pretty familiar underdog story.
Critics have been pretty split on this one, calling it charming but forgettable, so we’re giving our honest take on where it lands and whether Jake Johnson alone makes it worth the watch. Let us know in the comments if you’ve seen it and what you thought.
