Quentin Johnston 2023 Fantasy Football Rookie Profile
Overview
Quentin Johnston is a junior wide receiver prospect from Texas Christian University (TCU). Johnston broke out in 2022, eclipsing 1,000 receiving yards and helping the TCU Horned Frogs reach the College Football Playoffs and make a push for a National Championship.
His first two seasons at TCU saw Johnston only suit up for eight games each year. In the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, he led the team in receiving yards and averaged 22.1 Yards Per Reception (YPR). In 2021, despite missing three games with a knee injury, he again led the team in receiving yards and was a First-Team All-Big-12 selection.
While he occasionally lined up as a slot receiver (98 snaps) in his junior campaign, Johnston was primarily used out wide (577 snaps) with great success. He averaged 17.8 YPR in 2022 and had a 95.9 route run percentage. Over his three-year career at TCU, his Average Depth of Target (aDOT) was a healthy 15.6 yards, with an 8.3 Yards After Catch (YAC) average.
Pros
• Separation speed on cross routes
• Quick to adjust when the ball is in the air
• Highly athletic around the ball
• Relative speed despite a larger frame
• Dynamic downfield on deeper routes
• Speed and quickness create difficulty tackling in open space
Cons
• Lack of red zone usage
• Poor contested catch rate
• Slow to break on routes, especially underneath
• Inconsistent route runner
Quentin Johnston Comparison
DeAndre Hopkins (WR, Arizona Cardinals)
Garnering comparison to an elite talent like DeAndre Hopkins is something I don’t take lightly. The two players are similar in size, standing over 6 feet and weighing over 200 pounds. However, Johnston didn’t have quite the stat resumé Hopkins did at Clemson, notching just under 1,000 fewer receiving yards and 13 fewer touchdown catches.
While they don’t necessarily line up in the stat department, they are similar pass-catchers. Much like Hopkins, Johnston is adept in the middle of the field. Their combination of size and speed make them dangerous deep threats and difficult for defenders to handle in open space.
Quentin Johnston Fantasy Football Projection
The hype for Johnston has been building quickly as of late. He is currently ranked as the second-overall rookie wide receiver and fifth-overall rookie via PlayerProfiler. However, given a talented class of receivers in this year’s draft, his value could fluctuate throughout the offseason based on several factors; landing spot, organized team activities and training camp.
Johnston is likely to be a fantasy-relevant player for years to come. He could sneak into the WR2 range in year No. 1 if he ends up with a team who will give him volume. If you don’t have a top-10 pick in any formats of dynasty rookie drafts, you’ll likely miss out on rostering the talented wideout. However, he is unlikely to fly off boards ahead of established veterans in redraft formats. He could reasonably land in your lap in the seventh or eighth round there unless he wows in training camp this summer.
