From the moment the first trailer was released for “A Minecraft Movie,” my 8-year-old son asked me to go to this film. As a Dad who loves going to the movies, I wasn’t about to spoil my son’s wishes. However, regardless of how I felt about watching it on a personal level, I was excited to bring my son and continue his movie theater experiences.
I won’t bury the lede; the film itself isn’t good from a technical standpoint. But I can assure you that it is most definitely an experience, especially for kids.
“A Minecraft Movie” (2025) Review: It’s for the Kids
Jack Black & Jason Momoa Full-Send Acting
The plot and character development are nearly non-existent. But, when you have a younger target audience like this movie, those two points don’t matter. Jack Black and Jason Momoa lead the way as our heroes trying to save the day when they get sucked through a portal that takes them into the “Minecraft” world. For how shallow and futile this story truly is, I have to give both of them a ton of credit. There isn’t a shred of them mailing it in their performances. Both Jack Black and Jason Momoa fully embrace the goofy, over-the-top, slapstick nonsense that is this movie.
It’s for the Kids, Folks
It’s not a film that is going to “wow” audiences above the age of 14, unless they’ve been a die-hard fan of the game. However, there are a few moments of humor that made me laugh out loud. Two of them came from Jennifer Coolidge and her side story, which is completely ridiculous and yet made this father of three laugh audibly in a theater nearly full of families. And when I say nearly full I mean that; 10 minutes before the film and our IMAX theater was 75% filled with people still entering, a feat that not too many movies achieve these days.
Accept “A Minecraft Movie” for What It Is
It has some laughs and mild action for the kids, but “A Minecraft Movie” really doesn’t have much of a deeper meaning. Sure, there’s an underlying message, but it’s bland and never really takes shape. I will say, I did appreciate Jack Black’s musical numbers. As a 37-year-old and long-time “Tenacious D” fan, I always love it when he uses his vocal talents, and he doesn’t disappoint.
It’s not a cinematic masterpiece, but it entertained the family for the afternoon.
