2024 College Football Week 9 Picks (ATS & Totals)
#17 Boise State @ UNLV | Friday, 10:30 p.m. ET
We have a Friday night Mountain West showdown in Las Vegas. The 17th-ranked Boise State Broncos are 3.5-point favorites against the 6-1 UNLV Rebels. Both teams boast top-five scoring offenses in the country, which explains the high total set at 65.5 points.
For Boise State, Heisman favorite Ashton Jeanty is having a monstrous season, averaging 208 rushing yards per game at a ridiculous 9.9 Yards Per Carry (YPC) clip. The Broncos have been cashing tickets consistently, going 5-0-1 against the spread (ATS) and 4-2 to the over this season. They also own this series, going 4-0 all-time against UNLV, including a 44-20 win last year.
UNLV, on the other hand, comes into this game with a strong 6-1 record. Despite some controversy off the field, they’ve managed to go 4-2 ATS and hit the over four times. However, given Boise’s dominance in this matchup and Jeanty’s Heisman-caliber form, we’re not convinced 3.5 points is enough. Boise State should cover and maintain their perfect ATS streak.
Pick: Boise State -3.5 (-108)
Florida State @ #6 Miami | Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET
In the ACC on Saturday night, the sixth-ranked Miami Hurricanes are laying 21.5 points against their struggling rivals, the 1-6 Florida State Seminoles. Miami’s offense has been electric, coming off a 52-45 shootout win over Louisville. Led by their Heisman hopeful QB, Cameron Ward, the Hurricanes have the top-ranked offense in the country and are 6-0-1 to the over this season.
Florida State, on the other hand, is a complete mess. They just lost to Duke and are 0-7 ATS, having shuffled between quarterbacks Brock Glenn and Luke Kromenhoek. The Seminoles have shown little ability to compete, and Miami’s high-powered offense could easily put up 50 points on them.
Given Miami’s offensive firepower and Florida State’s inability to stop anyone, we love the over in this spot. Miami could take care of most of this number on their own, making this our play of the week.
Pick: Over 54.5 (-110)
#3 Penn State @ Wisconsin | Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET
In the Big Ten, the third-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions travel to Madison, Wisc., to take on the 5-2 Wisconsin Badgers. Penn State might be undefeated, but they’ve been a disappointment against the spread, going just 2-4 ATS this season. Still, they have one of the best all-around teams in the country, ranking 10th in total offense and sixth in total defense.
Coming off a bye week with Ohio State looming in Week 10, Penn State will rely on QB Drew Allar, TE Tyler Warren and their dynamic backfield of Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen. Wisconsin has also found their form, going 3-0 ATS in October with blowout wins over Purdue, Rutgers and Northwestern.
While Penn State has dominated this matchup in recent years, winning the last five meetings, we’re hesitant to trust them to cover in a look-ahead spot with Ohio State on deck. Instead, we’ll opt to play it safe and take Penn State on the moneyline, potentially pairing it in a parlay with another game.
Pick: Penn State ML (-230)
