2024 YellaWood 500 Betting Picks: Outrights

Ryan Blaney (+850)

It feels dumb to pick the favorite at a place like Talladega, but Ryan Blaney has all but mastered โ€˜Dega, especially in the fall race. The 30-year-old has won three times at Talladega, twice in the fall playoff race and has led laps in every Next-Gen race here.

He has an additional pair of runner-up finishes, a 3% T5 rate and a 40% T10 rate here. The No. 12 has also had a strong start to the playoffs, finishing no worse than P6 outside of the debacle at Watkins Glen.

Martin Truex Jr. (+2500)

This is the last time Iโ€™ll pick Martin Truex Jr. in this column this season. Iโ€™ve gone with the No. 19 on many occasions this year, only not to have it pay off. My bet on over 2.5 wins this season is all but dead and gone. Still, wouldnโ€™t it be ironic for Truex Jr. to earn his first-career superspeedway win in his full-time swan song? His +2500 odds on DraftKings match up with a large majority of the normal frontrunners to upper-mid-pack drivers.

The New Jersey native has only finished T10 in one of the last 17 Talladega races, and his P3 at Kansas last week was his first T5 since the spring Kansas race and first T10 since Pocono. However, you canโ€™t write anyone off in the chaos of Talladega. So, let me have one more shot at picking Truex Jr.

Zane Smith (+5500)

Speaking of anyone having a shot here, Zane Smith feels like a trendy longshot pick. His odds are +5500 on DraftKings and vary even more elsewhere. It’s a longshot you wouldn’t consider anywhere else… but Talladega is a different beast.

There have been no impressive stats on superspeedways for Smith, but the No. 71 has finished P5, P16 and P10 in the last three races. Thatโ€™s far better than anyone could have expected prior to Smith turning his season around with a runner-up finish at Nashville. Spire Motorsports as a whole is on the upswing, and a Talladega win for any of its drivers would be one hell of a statement.
