Late June and early July is traditionally a quiet period on the NFL calendar. Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and minicamps are over, and training camps will not open until late July for most teams.
This is the perfect time of year to scour your dynasty fantasy football leagues for trade opportunities to boost your squad’s likelihood of success. The players you should consider as your dynasty trade targets may have diminished value right now. Perhaps they are being underrated enough by your league mates that you can land a significant bargain.
I found a few overlooked players who are great dynasty trade targets. Let’s get to the good stuff.
Dynasty Trade Targets (July 2023) | Fantasy Football
Dalton Schultz (TE, Houston Texans)
Dalton Schultz will be suiting up in a different uniform this season. After making some waves as part of the high-caliber Dallas Cowboys offenses of recent years, he is off to Houston. Schultz emerged in 2020 after then-starter Blake Jarwin sustained a season-ending injury on his first catch of the season.
Schultz saw 89 targets in 2020, reeling in 63 of them for 615 yards and four touchdowns. Most significantly, he hauled in the starting tight end role for the Cowboys following that campaign. He has seen no fewer than 89 targets in the past three years, and he has compiled 2,000 receiving yards, along with 17 touchdowns.
In 2022, the Houston Texans completed 131 passes to their tight ends. Three of them, including team leader Jordan Akins, are no longer with the team. This leaves a lot of opportunity for Schultz. He figures to be a trusted target for rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud. Schultz is currently being drafted as TE17 despite finishing no lower than Points Per Reception (PPR) TE11 in each of the past three seasons.
Diontae Johnson (WR, Pittsburgh Steelers)
Diontae Johnson makes for another great dynasty trade target. Johnson had 92 targets in his rookie campaign and has no fewer than 144 in each of the past three seasons. His 460 targets since the start of the 2021 season rank top five in the NFL. An absence of a touchdown catch in 2022 has cratered his dynasty value. Receivers with far less on their NFL resumés are going ahead of Johnson at PPR WR35.
Quarterback Kenny Pickett finished his rookie year strong and is preparing for a sophomore effort behind an improved offensive line. Despite the fantasy expectations for teammate George Pickens, Johnson is a lock to lead the team in targets again this season. I will personally guarantee that he does not finish this year with zero touchdowns, barring a serious early-year injury.
Despite no touchdown catches, Johnson finished as WR30 last year. So, he is currently being drafted below his floor, and chances are the dynasty manager who rosters him in your league will be prepared to field offers.
David Montgomery (RB, Detroit Lions)
David Montgomery is another player changing teams this season. Now in Detroit, Montgomery will share backfield duties with first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs. D’Andre Swift left for Philadelphia. The Lions had a strong offense last season, finishing in the top five in both yards per game and points scored per game.
In four seasons with Chicago, Montgomery never had fewer than 1,074 scrimmage yards in a season. In addition to his production, Montgomery has been consistently healthy, which is a wonderful quality for a running back to possess. It stands to reason that Montgomery will get a lot of the first and second-down work in the Lions’ offense. His size will likely give him the majority of goal-line work, as well. Jamaal Williams, who led the NFL in rushing touchdowns in 2022, is no longer with the team.
Montgomery could carve out a significant role in this offense, and he is being drafted as RB23, well behind his rookie teammate. This makes him an excellent dynasty trade target, as many managers seem to be giving up on him, and his cost has never been lower. Montgomery would be a tremendous asset on a team trying to win their dynasty league this season.
