After all the Oscar buzz and talk the past few weeks about “Emilia Pérez,” it was finally time to dive into the film. It has an interesting enough plot to grab your attention, but its biggest flaw might be that it can’t hold it.
Just 15 minutes into the movie, I nearly turned it off. That’s how quickly it goes from a concept that could work to not working at all.
“Emilia Pérez” (2024) Review: The Worst Oscar Contender?
The One Highlight
The benefit of the doubt goes to the performances of our lead and supporting lead. Both Karla Sofia Gascon (Emilia Pérez) and Zoe Saldana (Rita Mora Castro) deliver solid performances. I’m not sure, however, that their performances are those of Oscar winners or even nomination-worthy.
Saldana is the better of the two, and as much as I enjoy her work, I don’t think it was strong enough to earn the praise or the Golden Globe Award that it has received.
Is “Emilia Perez” Oscar Worthy? Not if the General Public Had a Say
That notion coincides well with my thoughts and review of this film. There isn’t a single memorable or engaging song in this “musical.” The editing is rather choppy in certain portions, and the acting is between par and subpar. The story itself is promising but becomes convoluted and boring. I can’t believe this movie is receiving so much praise and that it will likely be reflected in nominations.
The fact that this could be considered for “Best Picture” is unbelievable. There are so many films that came out in 2024 that are better. It is one of the worst films I’ve watched, not just this year but ever.
If this work does receive nominations at the Oscars this March, the system is completely broken and incredibly disappointing. “Emilia Pérez” was a massive disappointment, and just over two hours of my life I’ll never get back.
