Let me get this out of the way now; “Wicked” absolutely delivers on everything fans have been dreaming of for years. Before diving into the nitty-gritty, let’s set the stage for those unfamiliar with the phenomenon.
“Wicked” is a retelling of the story of the Wicked Witch of the West, known here as Elphaba. It details her journey from an outcast student to the feared (and misunderstood) figure from “The Wizard of Oz.”
At its heart, “Wicked” is a story of friendship, identity and the societal pressures that shape (and sometimes break) us. The movie dives deep into Elphaba and Glinda’s (originally Galinda, with a “Guh”) time at Shiz University. While Elphaba’s green skin initially serves as a visual metaphor for being “different,” the story brilliantly expands to explore themes of systemic prejudice, misunderstood intentions and the fine line between hero and villain. In 2024, the film’s central message resonates as strongly as ever.
Now, let’s get to the good stuff. Is this movie worth seeing? Spoiler-free answer: absolutely.
I’ll explain why in my instant-reaction “Wicked” movie review!
“Wicked” Movie Review: Defying Gravity & Expectations
“Wicked” Cast
Cynthia Erivo As Elphaba
Cynthia Erivo absolutely shines as Elphaba, bringing her signature powerhouse Broadway voice to the big screen. Every note, every line and every emotion is delivered with precision and heart.
While we all knew her vocals would slay (and they do – her renditions of “The Wizard and I” and “Defying Gravity” are worth the ticket price alone), her acting is what truly elevates this film. From quiet, vulnerable moments to bold declarations of independence, Erivo masterfully captures Elphaba’s complexity.
Frankly, it’ll be a travesty if she doesn’t snag an Oscar nomination.
Ariana Grande As Glinda
For those who doubted Ariana Grande’s casting, prepare to eat your words. Grande brings a delightful mix of humor, vanity and unexpected depth to Glinda. Yes, the pop star’s voice is as ethereal as ever: Her rendition of “Popular” is a scene-stealing highlight.
However, it’s her nuanced portrayal of Glinda’s journey from a superficial socialite to a more self-aware (if imperfect) figure that truly impresses. Her chemistry with Erivo is magnetic, making the ups and downs of their friendship feel heartbreakingly real.
Supporting Cast
The supporting players are no less spectacular. Jonathan Bailey brings charm and vulnerability to the role of Fiyero, while Michelle Yeoh, as Madame Morrible, is a commanding presence who seamlessly balances camp and menace. Jeff Goldblum, as The Wizard, brings a surprising emotional complexity to the character, and Peter Dinklage adds his signature quirky charisma to Doctor Dillamond.
This ensemble doesn’t just support the leads; they enrich the entire narrative, making the Land of Oz feel vibrant and alive.
The Music
Now, the big question: Does the music hold up? In short, yes, and then some. Stephen Schwartz’s iconic score has been reimagined for the screen in ways that feel both faithful and fresh. Each number is a showstopper, elevated by stunning vocal performances and jaw-dropping visuals.
“Defying Gravity” is, as expected, the centerpiece of the film, and Erivo’s rendition will leave you breathless. It’s an emotional highlight and the climax/finale to the film, with Erivo and Grande’s harmonies weaving together beautifully to deliver a gut-wrenching moment. You’ll be shouting out Elphaba’s battle cry for days, weeks, maybe even months after. Erivo delivers the most important song in the film with power and grace. Grande brings her harmonic ability and the depth of Glinda’s journey.
Even less showy numbers like “I’m Not That Girl” carry a poignant emotional weight, thanks to the strength of the performances and direction.
The Visuals
Visually, Wicked is a feast for the eyes. Director Jon M. Chu (known for “Crazy Rich Asians” and “In the Heights”) brings his flair for dynamic, colorful storytelling to every frame. The Land of Oz is rendered with breathtaking detail, from the glittering opulence of Glinda’s world to the darker, grittier textures of Elphaba’s journey. The use of color, light and innovative camera work elevates the already iconic story to new cinematic heights.
Bottom Line
Wicked is not just a successful adaptation of a beloved musical – it’s a triumph. With its stellar performances, stunning visuals and timeless message, it defies expectations and cements itself as a must-see cinematic event. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a newcomer to the Wonderful World of Oz, this film will sweep you off your feet faster than a twister heading to Kansas.
So, is it worth your time? Grab your broomstick (or bubble) and get to the theater ASAP. “Wicked” has officially redefined what it means to defy gravity.
