Between Bets: 2024 Shriners Children’s 500 Outrights

Ross Chastain (+850)

There’s no better place to start than with Ross Chastain, the most recent winner at Phoenix, with favorable +850 odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook. Perhaps the best driver at Phoenix in the Next Gen era, Chastain finished second and third in a pair of desert races in 2022. The No. 1 team has also had a hot start to 2024, finishing seventh and fourth following his last-lap attempt at winning the Daytona 500.

Chase Elliott (+1800)

This pick definitely isn’t the chalk this week, but hear me out on Chase Elliott this week at +1800. The results haven’t been great here in the Next Gen car. Not including the spring 2023 race Elliott missed, the No. 9s finishes have been 11th, 28th and 16th.

Still, the team used to have some impressive speed at Phoenix, best shown in Elliott’s 2020 championship-winning race. The Georgia native has earned T10s here 53% of the time, with T5 runs in a third of his starts in the Grand Canyon State.

I believe Hendrick Motorsports (HMS) will take some big swings in the coming weeks to get its other two drivers to victory lane who have yet to win, especially when it’s the sport’s most popular driver we’re talking about.

Chase Briscoe (+2000)

That said, I’m a little more confident in the Chase that drives a Ford rather than a Chevrolet; Briscoe’s odds of +2000 are appealing. Phoenix is arguably Briscoe’s best track. His lone Cup win came here in the spring of 2022, and he’s finished in the top seven in two of his other five Cup starts here.

Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) showed some impressive speed with Noah Gragson’s No. 10 at one of his better tracks in Las Vegas last week. I’m expecting a similarly impressive run for Briscoe’s No. 14.
