The Fantasy Football Impact of Geno Smith Traded to the Raiders

by Ben Siebert

I know the saying goes, “The third time is the charm.” So, is Geno Smith the charm the Las Vegas Raiders need, as this is the third trade within the last week?

Geno Smith, in the last year of his current contract, was traded to the Raiders for a 2025 third-round pick. Let’s get into how it impacts the Seattle Seahawks and the Raiders for fantasy football purposes!

Geno Smith Impact

For someone who didn’t write back, I seem to do a lot of writing about him. This will now be his fifth different team and the third where he’ll be a starting quarterback. No need to sugarcoat it; the former West Virginia Mountaineer is definitely the best quarterback in the room, with his competition being Aidan O’Connell and Carter Bradley

Smith is now reunited with Pete Carroll, who he started for in the 2022-2023 seasons when he solidified himself as a serviceable and streamable quarterback. In 2022, you saw the greatest version of Smith, finishing with 30 passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions and 18.5 fantasy points per game, finishing as the QB5. In 2023, even though he only missed two games, it was the complete opposite. He had 20 passing touchdowns, nine interceptions and 15.7 fantasy points per game, finishing as QB19.

The veteran quarterback will still be a streamable QB1/QB2. He goes from chucking passes to Jaxon Smith-Njigba (JSN) and D.K. Metcalf to Brock Bowers and Jakobi Meyers. While the weapons are a bit of a downgrade, the offensive line is an upgrade. Alas, it has no impact on the quarterback. Just hope for more good than bad.

The Geno Smith trade will boost Brock Bowers only slightly. I see some concern that Smith may pass to his wide receivers more. Still, in the 2022 season, the Seahawks’ tight end group finished with the fourth-most fantasy points. Now, he gets one of the best tight ends that he’ll ever have in his NFL career, the record-holder in receptions and receiving yards for a rookie tight end.

The biggest winner here is Jakobi Meyers, who has seen 95+ targets in four straight seasons as a Patriot and Raider. In those seasons, his quarterbacks were only Mac Jones, Bailey Zappe, Brian Hoyer, Gardner Minshew, Jimmy Garoppolo, O’Connell and Desmond Ridder. Playing alongside these quarterbacks has been a major part of why he hasn’t finished as a top-20 fantasy wide receiver in his career. In these last two years as a Raider, he’s come close, finishing as WR21 in 2023 and WR29 in 2024. Hopefully, Smith can help get him to the next tier.

Seattle Seahawks Impact

It’s back to being sleepless in Seattle. As of publication, everybody will be downgraded, going from Geno Smith to Sam Howell. Now, we’re waiting to see which quarterback the Seahawks will land on the “quarterback carousel,” with Sam Darnold and Justin Fields as the more intriguing options. You can also throw a possible Russell Wilson reunion out there. If they get any of those three quarterbacks, it will only be a small downgrade for the Seahawks players.

Of course, that remains to be seen, and that’s just part two of the upcoming offseason drama for the Seahawks.
