Memorial Tournament 2024 Prop Bet of the Week

72 Hole Matchup: Ludvig Aberg (+115) vs. Viktor Hovland

The Tour heads to Jack’s place this week, and it may come as a surprise who I believe may struggle this time around. Viktor Hovland won this tournament last year in impressive fashion, closing the tournament out with a 33 on the back nine and propelling him on to victory in a playoff against Denny McCarthy. I was on Hovland to win this tournament last year, and he did not disappoint.

After his win at the Memorial last year, he finished in the top 30 of all seven tournaments he participated in to close out the 2023 season. This included two T13s, a 10th-place finish and two wins; the most notable win came at the Tour Championship, where he took the cake. There is no doubt that he ended last year on a historic run. However, this season’s Hovland is not the same as we golf fans got accustomed to seeing at the end of last year.

Through the eight events that Hovland has played in so far this season, he has only finished in the top 20 in two. Meanwhile, Ludvig Aberg has finished in the top 20 in seven out of 11 tournaments so far in 2024.

Two key statistical metrics must also be considered at Muirfield Village Golf Club, and those are scrambling and being able to avoid bogeys. Last year, Hovland ranked 48th on Tour in scrambling and 29th in bogey avoidance. His short game was much improved, some would say fine-tuned at this point in the season last year and it’s what played a large part in him taking home the hardware. This year, however, Hovland has struggled in general and around the greens. He ranks 141st on Tour in Scrambling and 89th in bogey avoidance.

Aberg, on the other hand, ranks 13th in scrambling and eighth in bogey avoidance. Hovland’s struggles this year have been masked by his strong showing at the PGA Championship, but I see it very possible that he will return back to where he was before the most recent Major. I am selling high on him this week.
