Fantasy Football Advice: Week 9 Mailbag

Fantasy Football Drop Candidates (4-4 in a 12-Team League) Who Do I Drop To Make Room for Players To Add On on Waivers: Michael MayerLatavius Murray, Michael Wilson, Calvin Austin III or Jaleel McLaughlin? – @NoobNoob187

In fantasy football, making the tough decision to drop a player from your roster can be as crucial as adding new talent through waivers. With a 4-4 record in a 12-team league, it’s time to assess your roster and free up space for potential additions. Let’s analyze your options:

Michael Mayer (TE, Las Vegas Raiders)

Michael Mayer has shown promise this season and has still been seeing an OK target share despite the recent offensive turmoil. However, after the firing of head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler, along with Jimmy Garoppolo being benched for rookie Aidan O’Connell, it’s challenging to trust any player outside of Josh Jacobs in the current state of the offense. Mayer did see a career-high 91% of snaps, which is a positive sign, but the instability in the offense makes him a risky hold.

Latavius Murray (RB, Buffalo Bills)

Latavius Murray’s snap share decreased to 33% in Week 8, and the addition of Leonard Fournette further complicates his role. Fournette is an effective back who will likely command a significant role in the Buffalo Bills’ backfield. Given the dwindling opportunities for Murray, he’s a reasonable candidate to drop.

Michael Wilson (WR, Arizona Cardinals)

Michael Wilson has been running 80% of snaps and averaging five targets, which is promising. The return of Kyler Murray could make him an intriguing option in the future. However, it’s important to exercise caution, as it may not be wise to start him until around Week 12 or 13. Holding him with the anticipation of a stronger connection with Murray may be a worthwhile gamble, depending on your roster construction.

Calvin Austin (WR, Pittsburgh Steelers)

Calvin Austin is someone you should have dropped weeks ago. He’s a part-time player in an offense that has struggled to produce consistent fantasy options. Better options are available on the waiver wire, making Austin an easy cut.

Jaleel McLaughlin (RB, Denver Broncos)

Jaleel McLaughlin is undoubtedly a talented player, but playing in Sean Payton‘s offense can be frustrating for fantasy managers. Despite limited snaps, he McLaughlin managed to total 5.9 PPR points in Week 8. He has proven his worth, possessing RB1 upside when Javonte Williams is injured.

Bottom Line

In terms of the order to hang onto these players, considering your situation, Jaleel McLaughlin should be your top priority to retain. Michael Mayer and Michael Wilson can be your secondary options, depending on the rest of your roster and the league’s tight end and wide receiver landscape.

Letting go of Latavius Murray and Calvin Austin is a prudent move. Your remaining choices will depend on your individual roster needs and future plans. Be sure to evaluate and compare the remaining players with the options available on the waiver wire to make the most informed decisions for your team’s success.
