Who Benefits the Most After the Jets Move for Davante Adams? — @WishList
The football world was put on notice after the unexpected (OK, not really) trade for Davante Adams. The New York Jets acquired the wide receiver from the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for a 2025 conditional second-round pick. The pick is currently a third-round pick. However, it could convert into a second-rounder based on some incentives, such as earning All-Pro honors or reaching the AFC Championship.
The obvious answer to who benefits most from the Davante Adams trade is Adams himself. He’s reuniting with his former quarterback who has some lofty history. With Aaron Rodgers behind center, Adams had a 91.6 receiving grade, 687 receptions for 8,247 yards and 76 touchdowns.
This move occurred a week after Jets owner Woody Johnson fired Robert Saleh when the team returned from London. That said, I will focus on the Jets here because the only real beneficiaries in Las Vegas are obviosly Brock Bowers, Jakobi Meyers and – to some degree – Tre Tucker.
Let’s get into it.
The Jets’ Offensive Roster Before the Davante Adams Trade
The Jets’ roster was already essentially stacked on offense. They have Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, Breece Hall and an up-and-coming Braelon Allen.
However, New York is still coming up short in games. For example, despite Rodgers throwing for over 300 yards, Lazard and Wilson notching 100+ passing yards and Hall’s big rushing game on”Monday Night Football,” they still fell short to the Buffalo Bills.
Based on your interpretation, Mike Williams‘ critical error at the end of the game arguably caused Rodgers’ interception. With Adams, there’s a solid chance that does not happen. That said, Williams is certainly on the trade block following this move.
Lazard has picked up steam after his first 100+ yard game this season, and he already has five touchdowns this season. The question remains on who will truly be the team’s WR2, as far as production, behind Adams. On paper, it’s Wilson, but his role will be something to look out for.
The Todd Downing Effect
The Jets have interestingly struggled with the run game despite having Hall and an emerging Allen in the backfield. There were “Missing: Breece Hall” memes across fantasy football social media, and for good reason. Before Week 6, Hall has not rushed for over 65 yards in a game all season.
However, in Week 6, the Jets switched from Nathaniel Hackett to Todd Downing calling plays. Hall’s touch share instantly increased with 23 of 26 backfield touches and he delivered 169 total yards. Meanwhile, Wilson had six catches for 107 yards and a touchdown on 10 targets. Lazard also had six catches but for 114 yards on seven targets. Wilson has put up 256 receiving yards in the past two weeks, which is fifth in the NFL. He also leads the league in targets (66).
Wilson is starting to figure things out with Rodgers, but Downing’s play-calling could further positively impact the offense and receiving corps despite Adams taking away targets from Wilson and Lazard.
Who Benefits the Most From the Davante Adams Trade?
Besides Adams, Rodgers clearly benefits the most and could be fantasy-relevant down the stretch with two elite WRs. He has more tools in his toolbox, which would also help open the box up for Hall. However, despite popular belief, I also think that Wilson benefits here, especially in the long run.
Yes, he will lose volume. As a result, his immediate fantasy value will decrease. However, I believe adding Adams will open things up for Wilson, with more defenders focusing on the newest Jets receiver. This will make Wilson more efficient and could bring more scoring opportunities his way, too. The offensive line remains a concern, so both receivers must embrace shallower Average Depth of Target (aDOT) targets. Yet, Rodgers is a future Hall-of-Famer. He knows how to find and feed all of his playmakers.
Yes, Rodgers does tend to throw to his favorites. However, I do not expect Wilson’s value to tank significantly He’s a mid WR2 until further notice. I would not break the bank for him in trades, but the former Ohio State Buckeye is an interesting buy-low trade target if his manager is panicked by this move.
The short answer is that Adams, who re-emerges as a low-end fantasy WR1, benefits the most from this trade. Rodgers, who could be a low-end QB1 moving forward, is a close second. Wilson is still a buy but will have to return value on efficiency rather than pure volume. This is a net gain for Hall, while Lazard is the only true immediate fantasy football loser from the move.
