72 Hole Matchup: Tom Kim (-110) vs. Jordan Spieth
As the world’s best prepare for what will most likely be the toughest test of golf that they’ll face this year, it’s vital to have your game in good shape heading into this week.
This week, I’m taking into account the approach buckets from inside 100 yards, between 125-150 yards and 200-225 yards. It will also be important to gain strokes off the tee and save strokes putting. My model also strongly accounted for par-4 scoring average, total putting, one-putt percentage and 3-putt avoidance.
Jordan Spieth has struggled with multiple areas of his game since last year, really. He continues to struggle as of late. Spieth hasn’t had a T20 finish in his last seven events and has missed three cuts during that span. Meanwhile, Tom Kim has two top-20s and hasn’t missed a cut in his last seven events.
Through the 2023 season, Kim ranked 10th on Tour in strokes gained on approach to Spieth’s 71st. Kim also ranked 21st in total driving, to Spieth’s 121st. The 21-year-old Korean even ranked better than the three-time Major winner in all of the approach buckets noted earlier and ranked seventh in par-4 scoring average, while Spieth ranked 122nd.
This course sets up better for Kim than Spieth. These two players’ games are trending in opposite directions right now. Although there will be carnage this week, I anticipate Kim to come out ahead of Spieth when the dust settles at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club.
