by Colin McTamany

It’s time for the “Survivor 48” castaways to begin looking toward the end of the game if they haven’t already been. That’s what each vote must take into consideration moving forward. It’s easier said than done, as seen in the latest episode. Let’s dive into what all went down in Episode 10.

“Survivor 48” Episode 10 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

Episode Recap

The Core Four

After voting out David in Episode 9 of “Survivor 48,” the previous “Strong Six” alliance is looking more like “The Core Four.” This group consists of Eva, Joe, Shauhin and Kyle. By voting out David, this group has no connection with Mary, sending her back to the bottom.

Knowing she’s fallen out of a position of power, Mary attempts to start a revolution from the bottom. Her plan is to pull in Mitch, Star and Kamilla as a voting block of four to break up the stronger group of four. Shauhin views Mitch as a “free agent” and starts having conversations with him about pulling him in. It’s always so tough to get a plan to work with an even number of castaways left in the game.

The Reward Challenge

Episode 10 of “Survivor 48” has a reward challenge separate from the immunity challenge. For the reward challenge, each castaway competes individually. They each have their feet tied together and their hands tied closely to their abdomen. Once the challenge begins, each castaway must slither like a snake in the sand with their hands and feet in a fixed position. To make it even tougher, they each have to transport a buoy with them. The buoy is tied to a rope with a handle that each castaway must hold in their mouth.

Once they slither to a checkpoint, they must then navigate the buoy through a small rope obstacle. After doing so, they have three rings to untie and toss onto poles a few feet away. Nearly everyone is competitive in this challenge, but Kyle ultimately beats Joe by seconds to win reward.

The reward for winning this challenge is fried chicken and waffles. Before the challenge, Jeff Probst gets the remaining players to chant “fried chicken and waffles!” over and over. It’s a great moment with all of them chanting while Shauhin mixes it up, chanting “They’re savory! They’re sweet! They’re what you want to eat!”

Kyle is allowed to take three castaways with him to enjoy his reward victory. He chooses Eva, then Kamilla and then Shauhin. By doing so, he hopes Mitch, Mary and Star are angry enough that they focus on voting out one of The Core Four, specifically Joe.

The Immunity Challenge

The immunity challenge is a “Survivor” classic. Each castaway must spell the word “IMMUNITY” with individual letter blocks stacked vertically on a wobbly table connected to a rope. They must keep the table balanced by holding the rope at all times. One by one, they are to collect blocks by walking backwards from the wobbly table to retrieve the blocks, then walk back to place them.

Throughout this “Survivor 48” immunity challenge, it looked like Kyle, Joe, Shauhin or Mary were going to win. They all dropped their blocks at inopportune moments, requiring them to start over. Ultimately, Joe is victorious, winning his third immunity challenge of the season. This foils any plans of taking out Joe and breaking up “The Core Four.”

Tribal Council

The plan quickly shifts from taking out one of “The Core Four” to “The Core Four” taking out either Star or Mary. While the concept of utter dominance by Eva, Joe, Kyle and Shauhin this season has made “Survivor 48” uneventful, their alliance must be respected. Eventually, it will all come crashing down, and when it does, it will be worth the watch!

At tribal council, there is a large discussion about trust versus paranoia. Shauhin does a great job pointing out that if you do experience any level of paranoia in “Survivor 48,” you cannot be trusted. If you cannot be trusted, you will be voted out. When it comes to the vote, the tribe decided to send Star home over Mary with a 5-3 vote.

“Survivor 48” Castaway Betting Odds + Power Rankings

"Survivor 48" Episode 10 Recap + Castaway Betting Odds

Every week, I’ll have the remaining “Survivor 48” castaways ranked and paired with odds to win the game. Just like any other set of rankings, these are fluid based on new information from each episode. After Episode 10 of “Survivor 48,” these power rankings reflect my thoughts on each player’s chances to win the game.

In six straight episodes, a player from the bottom three of the previous power rankings has been eliminated. Star spent the majority of the season at the bottom of the “Survivor 48” power rankings. She will be missed as easily one of the funniest people to play the game in recent memory.

  1. Eva (+400)
  2. Kyle (+500)
  3. Kamilla (+600)
  4. Joe (+700)
  5. Shauhin (+700)
  6. Mitch (+1000)
  7. Mary (+1000)

Power Rankings Analysis

The Favorites

Eva can guarantee herself a spot in the final five of “Survivor 48.” At the next tribal council, she needs to use her Safety Without Power advantage. This removes Eva, or any castaway in its possession, from tribal council before the vote. So, assuming she plays it on herself, Eva can’t be voted out, but she won’t cast a vote either.

Kyle and Kamilla are such a dangerous duo. While he has a firm position in “The Core Four,” we continue to see him sharing and plotting with Kamilla. Especially when Joe’s name is discussed as a possible vote, Kyle explains to Kamilla that he can’t vote for Joe because it would be yet another “Survivor 48” jury member he’s burned in the game. Kamilla respects his sentiment. That’s interesting because his sentiment is based on making it to the end and claiming the title over her.

The Mid-Range

If the remaining castaways have an opportunity to take out Joe, it seems like they will. He’s won three immunity challenges, is very likable and has been at the top of the “Survivor 48” power rankings all season with a better-than-most chance to win the game. It’s hard to imagine him actually sitting at the final tribal council unless he goes on a challenge run of wins or Eva protects him with her immunity idol.

Shauhin continues to come up in conversation as a sneaky threat to win “Survivor 48,” but he’s in such a strong alliance that the tribe hasn’t taken a shot at him yet. He’s always competitive in challenges, and some late-season wins could propel him higher up the “Survivor 48” power rankings as the end nears.

The Longshots

Kyle talked about making “little pushes” to help put a plan in motion rather than making a big move. Mitch and/or Mary need to make a big move. If they don’t, they’ll be next to get picked off by “The Core Four” alliance. If that’s the case, it will be a showdown among strong competitors who each swore to do battle at the end.
