PGA DFS: Butterfield Bermuda Championship 2023

by Conor Coughlin

Welcome to the Butterfield Bermuda Championship! We had a rough go last week for our PGA DFS lineups. It’s time to get back on track with a tougher course and a much worse field! Don’t be afraid to roster the golfers you know this week. I have a lot of lineups that have a core of three players under $8,000. You can build solid, balanced lineups. If you fancy some risk, see my strategy below for how to attack from a more studs-and-duds angle!

Course Breakdown

Port Royal Golf Course

  • Southampton, Bermuda
  • Par 71
  • 6,830 yards
  • Bermuda Greens

Port Royal Golf Course is a very short coastal golf course. The main teeth of this course is the weather. It is often windy and will be as such this week. Given that this is a shorter course, I don’t see the inherent upside of bombers as we have projected in previous weeks during the PGA Tour wrap-around season.

The trend seems to lean towards shorter, accurate hitters who can fight their way through windier conditions. Off-the-tee accuracy, not distance, may prove to be of vital importance as many of these holes are nestled against the coastline. Accuracy will matter this week, and I like golfers who can also get up and down if the wind plays havoc and they find themselves missing fairways or greens.

Stats to Build Around:

  • Shots Gained Tee to Green
  • Good Drives Gained
  • Shots Gained Scrambling
  • Shots Gained Approach
  • Shots Gained Par 3’s
  • Shots Gained Par 5’s
  • Shots Gained Total in Windy/Extreme Conditions

PGA DFS Strategy

Lesser-field events are always tricky. There will always be random golfers you fall in love with stat-wise, and they just don’t show up. It’s a volatile time of year for sure. I recommend going with a buckshot approach with some of the lesser-known players. Don’t over-invest or get sucked into the “Average DFS Points” listed on DraftKings. These players have high upside, but also a very low floor. I like building a solid core of three or four top-tier proven players and then plugging in some of the lesser-known golfers in a somewhat random assortment and hope that my model has churned out the right skill set. These are the weeks I trust my stats more than my eyes. In a field like this… pinch your nose and plug ’em in. Also, play within your means this week, considering the high volatility.
