PGA DFS: RSM Classic 2023

by Conor Coughlin

The PGA wraparound season is coming to a close and we are looking to get some cash in our pockets this week at Sea Island Resort. We have had a great fall season at In-Between Media (IBT), so let’s finish on a high note with some winning PGA DFS lineups!

This tournament is a little different in that we will see two different courses in play on Thursday and Friday. Keep that in mind because you will want to look at the weather and the tee time splits, plus the course rotation, when you are rostering your players.

Course Breakdown

Sea Island Resort in Saint Simons Island, Georgia

Seaside Course

  • Par 70
  • 7,005 Yards
  • Bermuda Greens

Plantation Course

  • Par 72
  • 7,060 Yards
  • Bermuda Greens
  • The easier of the courses courses. Golfers will play this course once, either Thursday or Friday.

The two-course split here prior to the cut does make betting and PGA DFS a little trickier, as you will want to pay attention to who is at what course and what the weather is setting up like. There could be an advantage based on the weather conditions here. The Seaside Course is one of the shortest courses on Tour and, as the name implies, is a coastal links-style course. The Plantation Course tends to play much easier and is far less links-style, offering some protection from the coastal winds.

Seaside Course sets up relatively easily and with a higher-than-average fairway and greens-hit percentage. This will be about accuracy and will most likely come down to a putting contest. The main defenses here, outside of the weather, are expansive native areas of marsh and sandy waste areas. Most greens are also protected by bunkering and deep rough.

The Plantation Course will play easier than the Seaside Course. The fairways are wide and tree-lined, while the greens are smaller than at the Seaside Course. The weather can play havoc here, too, but in general, this is an easier, more receptive course. The main defense here will be the bunkering, specifically the greenside bunkers that will condense already smaller green complexes.

Stats to Build Around:

  • Shots Gained Approach
  • Shots Gained Par 4’s and Par 5’s (skewing toward easier Par 5’s setups)
  • Three-Putt Avoidance
  • Birdie-or-Better Rate
  • Fairway and Green-in-Regulation Rates
  • Shots Gained Tee to Green
  • Opportunities Gained

PGA DFS Strategy

We don’t get too wrapped up in weather splits usually, however this week, it is something to mention and take into account when you are building out your rosters. I recommend doing multiple builds that favor certain tee times and course rotation. I will have several lineups constructed around this method.

Additionally, I wouldn’t stray too far from the archetype we are looking for: Accurate on approach and sturdy putting. The golfers who can get it done on both fronts will be around for the weekend, so don’t be afraid to roster them even if they don’t have the perfect split. Build PGA DFS lineups with a theme, so to speak. Some builds around weather, course and some player type are all viable this week at the RSM Classic. There is an edge somewhere in there, so I will be diversifying a bit more than normal this week.
