PGA DFS: Sanderson Farms Championship 2023

by Conor Coughlin

Who loves winning money on a bunch of golfers we won’t talk about after October? We do! The wraparound season is anything but exciting, but it is a time to fine-tune your process and dive a little deeper into some of the lesser-known talents on Tour. Do I think it’s worth missing football on Sunday? Nope, not at all. Nonetheless, I will try to find some good plays that will keep you sweating until kickoff on Sunday! The Sanderson Farms Championship does have a decent field this year, featuring some favorite up-and-comers that will make some noise this coming season.

The other great thing about the wraparound is that you actually get to see these golfers on the broadcast, which can definitely help you get to know their shot shapes, misses and how they compete when the chips are down.

Course Breakdown

The Country Club of Jackson

  • Jackson Mississippi
  • Par-72
  • 7,455 yards
  • Bermuda Greens

There isn’t a ton to say about this course. It’s narrow-ish and tree-lined, but that hasn’t impacted the bomb-and-gauge theory from working. Cameron Champ won here, that should tell you something. The greens are larger than average, and they are typically very receptive. The par 4s as a whole are relatively short, and the four par 5s are some of the most scored on par 5s these golfers will see all season.

This course is pretty easy, but the home stretch of 16,17 and 18 are three of the hardest holes. So there is potential for some big numbers or misses, and all we can do is hope that creates some drama for the final pairing on Sunday. Otherwise, this may not be the most exciting four days of golf this year.

There are a couple of sticky stats here. Winners have excelled at approach from 100-150, been rock solid around the greens and gained massively on the green.

The bomber piece, while not sticky, does provide a narrative that the players who can be hitting wedges more often typically rise to the top at the Sanderson Farms Championship. I am not limiting myself to just bombers, as there are a lot of excellent iron players in this field who could compete on any course with the accuracy and control they have.

Stats To Build Around:

  • Shots Gained Approach 100-150 yards
  • Shots Gained Putting
  • Shots Gained Around-the-Green
  • Birdies-or-Better Gained
  • Shots Gained off the Tee
  • Driving Distance
  • Par-5 Shots Gained

DFS Strategy

These are the types of events that I like to find a less expensive Mass Multi-Entry (MME) event on DraftKings and max enter it. Everyone’s bankroll is different, so if your unit size is only 25 or 50-cent tournaments, then only play that. If you have a ton of money burning a hole in your pocket and max out the $25, then, by all means, give it a go! The reason I would suggest max entering is due to the volatile nature of the wraparound season. There are a lot of players that may pop up that aren’t really on your radar. There could be players you know really well that just have a hot week and won’t pop again the rest of the year. You never truly know with these lesser-field events.

If you are more of a single-entry tournament player, I would suggest playing as many of the top golfers as you can while focusing on being as well-balanced as possible. Catching lightning in a bottle with a “stars and scrubs” type of lineup will be very difficult or impossible in a single-entry format.

My player pool is slightly expanded this week. I typically build from a pool of 20-25 players. This week, I will have closer to 40 players that I am mixing and matching.
