PGA DFS: World Wide Technology Championship 2023

by Conor Coughlin

The In-Between Media (IBT) golf team has been rolling so far in the PGA wraparound season, and now we head south to what sets up to be the easiest course players may see all year! This week will be an absolute score-fest! We’ll do our best to find some angles to exploit the PGA DFS slate for the World Wide Technology Championship at El Cardonal at Diamante!

Course Breakdown

El Cardonal at Diamante

  • Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
  • Par 72
  • 7,450 yards
  • Paspalum Greens

This will be the first time a Tiger Woods design will play host to a PGA event. This is a resort-style course at its core and should play relatively easy versus the Tour standard. The fairways here are wider than average by a lot. The greens are massive and are easy to hold despite how fast this course will play. The biggest defense here is typically the gusty and downright brutal winds that can cut through the course. However, there is next to no wind forecasted this week.

I do foresee the approach game being critical, as it typically is, but here, it will be the longer yardages ranging from 150 yards and out. With the greens being much larger than average, I may lean on golfers who stick it closer than others and avoid the dreaded three-putt. Outside of that, I would expect this course to get absolutely owned by these plays. Bomb away, boys!

Stats to Build Around:

  • Shots Gained Approach
  • Proximity from 150+ yards
  • Three-Putt Avoidance
  • Birdie-or-Better Rate
  • Driving Distance
  • Shots Gained Par 5’s

PGA DFS Strategy

I don’t normally get too caught up in a bomber narrative, but this place is offering little or no resistance against golfers who can smash the ball. I mentioned the lack of wind, and that has made my decision to green-light the longest of hitters this week. Oftentimes, the players who bomb it are less than accurate, but at El Cardonal, it really doesn’t matter. The most narrow fairway here is a whopping 70 yards across. The bunkering is odd, as well. The bunkers that might be penalizing to the average golfer are purely for aesthetics, as far as the majority of this field is concerned. There is virtually no rough to speak of, and you have to be in excess of 70 yards wayward off of the tee to find trouble.

Tee it high and let it fly! Most of my PGA DFS builds will be distance-centric at the Worldwide Technology Championship.
