Week 10 Fantasy Football Advice Mailbag
“Jonathan Mingo to Cowboys… SMH. Will He Even Beat Out Tolbert for the WR2?” — @TexasTrojan2004
How ’bout them Cowboys??
In all seriousness, oye. Given the Cowboys’ interesting situation, especially with injuries, this one will be short-and-sweet compared to other mailbag articles.
Let’s get to it.
Jonathan Mingo Traded to the Cowboys
Let’s be straightforward from the beginning. Jonathan Mingo and essentially any Cowboys receiver not named CeeDee Lamb will see their fantasy value dip, with Dak Prescott expected to head to Injured Reserve (IR) with a hamstring injury.
However, the Mingo trade is something to evaluate slightly long term. The receiver has two years left on his current deal. Since 1970, only three receivers in NFL history began their careers with at least 55 receptions and did not have a touchdown. The Cowboys’ new receiver is the third one.
He only has 12 catches for 121 yards this season. Mingo has only had two games in his career with over four catches. The Ole Miss product may have been in a rough situation in Carolina, but the numbers are severely underwhelming.
The Fantasy Football Fallout of Jalen Tolbert
Statistically, Jalen Tolbert has already put up better numbers this season than his previous two years combined. In eight games, he already has 30 catches for 353 yards and three touchdowns. CeeDee Lamb is the clear WR1 and is expected to play despite a shoulder injury. Cooper Rush starting shouldn’t have a huge negative impact on the WR1 as 78.6% of his targets were catchable in 2022, compared to 82.5% from Prescott. Jake Ferguson will also continue to eat plenty of targets.
Tolbert’s overall role has been modest. He recorded under 45 receiving yards in four of the Cowboys’ last five games. Despite facing a tough Philadelphia Eagles secondary in Week 10, I don’t see how Mingo will negatively impact Tolbert’s WR2 role immediately or this season. I do expect the passing game to still be crucial with the run game struggling, and Rush has shown to be a quality backup. Still, I’m not confident in deeming any Cowboys weapon as must-starts besides Lamb and Ferguson, given your tight end position is lackluster.
The Verdict
Dallas needed another weapon regardless of Brandin Cooks‘ health, and acquiring one after your $60-million QB goes down is interesting timing.
Could Mingo’s role expand down the line? Sure. However, this move is more for next season, with the Cowboys facing big contracts for Micah Parsons and others.
Yes, they can play Mingo in the slot, and Rush is a capable backup, but I don’t see Mingo making an impact with Prescott’s injury and his proven skillset thus far. You can only blame the Panthers for so much.
Tolbert is a borderline rosterable player for the rest of the season, but Mingo shouldn’t be rostered in redraft formats – at least until Prescott returns. If the Cowboys don’t add weapons this offseason, he could be a sneaky late-round sleeper for 2024 at best.
