RBC Canadian Open 2024 Betting Picks

Sahith Theegala (+1800)

Sahith Theegala continues to be one of my favorite rising stars on Tour. He seemingly gets better and more rounded every week. He has been gaining week in and week out off the tee, which will be critical at the RBC Canadian Open.

Over his last eight starts, Theegala is gaining 1.70 strokes in that department per tournament. He has also been red hot with his putter over the same stretch and rates out No. 4 in this field for strokes gained putting. Fresh off last week, where he gained 6.1 strokes on the green. His approach game has also been nails over the last 20 rounds, gaining an average of 3.2 strokes per tournament. He is becoming more and more consistent, and in a field of this strength, +1800 seems like the best value atop this board.

Maverick McNealy (+3000)

Maverick McNealy has been playing some of the more consistent golf we have seen in his career this season. McNealy hasn’t quite gotten over the hump into contention, even though he has been playing well. I see a chance that changes at Hamilton Golf and Country Club this week.

He has gained an average of 6.2 strokes tee-to-green over his last two starts and that was at considerably more difficult tracks and in much tougher fields. What was once a strength of his game, putting, has been somewhat lackluster. Not to the point that it’s costing him wins just not helping him to get to the finish line either. He has been close a few times this year: sixth at the WM Phoenix Open, 13th at the Mexico Open, ninth at The Players and 17th last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

I like McNealy on these shorter tracks that require good wedges and accuracy. He has the tools to win here; it’s just a question of whether it all comes together this week.

Kevin Yu (+6500)

Kevin Yu can’t putt. Now that we have that out of the way, do you know what he does well? Pretty much everything else. Yu is the typical player we talk about that just needs a flat-putting week, and he can win. That is precisely what it would take. It is very much like another player, I like this week, Cameron Young (+2200).

Yu has an average drive of 312 yards and hits fairways over 60% of the time. Distance can be a weapon here if used accurately. He is also second in this field over the last 24 rounds in greens in regulation and 17th for opportunities gained. He is hitting the green and giving himself a lot of looks at birdie or better. I think this will be a bit of a birdie fest; last time the RBC Canadian was played here, we saw Rory McIlroy shoot a -22 to win.

I’m leaning into the volatility of Yu’s putter because of the upside he has at +6500. It’s a bet not without its risk, but he does have many of the tools you need to be a winner at Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

Myles Creighton (+60000)

Myles Creighton is becoming my favorite longshot bet of the week. Believe me, I have done dumber stuff with five bucks. Creighton is one of the few Canadians in the field that I am looking at for the RBC Canadian Open. He is having a pretty nice season on the Korn Ferry Tour (KFT), where he has made eight of 11 cuts and has four T25s, including three T10s and a second-place finish.

He isn’t quite as long off the tee as some of the other players I like here. He averages 296 yards. Yet, he does have a considerably better accuracy rate at 69.55%. He also hits greens in regulation at a blistering 78.82%. He has the accuracy game nailed down. His putting is very middle of the field, but he does rate out incredibly well when it comes to converting birdies and is ranked ninth on the KFT for birdies or better. He is also in the top 20 for overall strokes gained on par 4s.

We know Creighton can score and he may be way undervalued at 600/1 this week.
