The Players Championship 2024 Betting Picks
Justin Thomas (+2200)
Justin Thomas, who is my bet to emerge as the PGA Tour Player of the Year, is also my favorite to win this week at The Players Championship. “JT” has an elite iron game, which we all know, but his off-the-tee game has actually been uncharacteristically good over his last five starts. We are lucky to see him hover around flat in this metric, but he has been averaging close to 1.4 strokes over that stretch. His scrambling and around-the-green game has also been on point, with him rating out in the top five in this field for both over the last 36 rounds.
I am not looking heavily at course history this week, but Thomas does tend to play well at TPC Sawgrass. He won this event back in 2021. I love his form, and I think The Players Championship will be his first win of the season!
Shane Lowry (+4000)
I don’t know what it is about Irish players, but I struggle to be on them at the right time. I have been interested in Lowry for a few weeks but haven’t pulled the trigger. This is the tournament. He has been playing great golf, and this course will potentially favor accuracy rather than distance off the tee, which is more his game. The approach games has been nails, gaining 4.1 strokes at The Arnold Palmer Invitational and 6.3 strokes at the Cognizant Classic. He finished third and fourth, respectively. He hits fairways at a 70% rate and greens at a 69% rate. Lowry has the accuracy and control that we are looking for at TPC Sawgrass.
He has done well here in recent years, placing 35th, 13th and eighth in his last three starts, and he is in far better form leading up to this year’s event. I’m going in on Lowry this week and hoping I waited just long enough to get the win!
Byeong Hun An (+6500)
This may be the first time I have ever bet Byeong Hun An as an outright. He is just playing far too well to ignore. I have used An a lot in DFS but just never saw the winning upside. I see the potential now, though, and I don’t want to miss out. Coming off of a T8 at The Arnold Palmer Invitational, where he gained 3.27 strokes off the tee and 5.5 strokes total, I would say he is in good form. He actually had a down week on approach, finishing basically flat for the week, but in his previous two starts, he averaged 3.1 gained. He has yet to miss a cut in 2024 and has three T10s coming in.
Unlike Thomas and Lowry, An doesn’t have any stand-out performances at The Players Championship, but his situation is one that form alone is cause to bet him. Elite off-the-tee game, strong approach play and gaining in scrambling metrics, he seems like the perfect fit for TPC Sawgrass!
Adam Scott (+8000)
Adam Scott rated out in the top-three players in my model for value to odds. I can’t ignore that. He is coming off of a missed cut last week, which is not a great look, considering the tournament structure. Still, I am willing to forgive him.
Before that, he hadn’t missed the cut in his previous nine starts, during which he had five T10s. Scott is not necessarily known for his accuracy off the tee, but his approach game tends to make up for it. He has a 68.8% greens in regulation rate, which is not fantastic as a standalone stat. Yet, when you couple it with his No.2 ranking on approach shots from 200+ yards, it starts to make a more compelling case to lay some money on him at TPC Sawgrass. Scott has enjoyed a lot of success at The Players over his career, and winning for the second time 20 years later would be a pretty cool story!
