Wells Fargo Championship 2024 Betting Picks

Rory McIlroy (+650)

I’m excited to get Rory McIlroy back on a course that he knows and loves, especially coming off of such a high at The Zurich Classic. Hopefully, that was the get-right moment we needed for McIlroy.

Quail Hollow Club is the best opportunity for him to get another win. He has won here three times and has rarely finished outside of the top 10 over his career starts here. It makes perfect sense that McIlroy has been THE horse for the course; it sets up nearly perfectly for him. Distance off the tee is at a premium, and no one is better at bombing than McIlroy. His approach game overall has been suspect from time to time, but his best and most consistent range over the years is the 150-175-yard bucket. He will see plenty from that yardage at Quail Hollow.

Despite the slow start to the year, McIlroy is in the top 10 for the scoring metrics I used in my model. When the 35-year-old gets on a streak, everyone else on Tour is irrelevant. With no Scottie Scheffler this week, look for McIlroy to keep it rolling right into the PGA Championship.

Wyndham Clark (+1600)

Speaking of players who fit Quail Hollow Club almost perfectly, how about defending champion Wyndham Clark? The former Oregon Duck won the Wells Fargo Championship handily, beating Keegan Bradley by four strokes in 2023.

He is No.3 in this field in driving distance over the last 24 rounds, which checks the box. Clark is also No.1 in strokes gained putting over the same stretch, and to no surprise, is No.1 in birdie-or-better rate. Clark scores in the T10s for par 4s over 450 yards and par 5s in general.

His overall approach game is the only question mark, and even that still rates on No.15 in this field. He has the blueprint to win here, and I like the way he sets up to go back-to-back at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Will Zalatoris (+3500)

Will Zalatoris may be going a little under the radar as a result of his injury withdrawal from The CJ Cup Byron Nelson last week. The withdrawal was preventative maintenance of his back. There’s no reason to think he won’t get right back to work this week.

The San Francisco native is a bit shorter off the tee than some of the golfers I am betting on for the Wells Fargo Championship, but he more than makes up for it with his approach game. He is No. 10 in this field from 200 yards or more on approach. He is 11th in overall approach. Zalatoris also scores better than 95% of this field on long par 4s and par 5s. He sets up better than he is getting credit for here.

It doesn’t hurt his case that he already has three T10s this year, including a runner-up at The Genesis Invitational and a ninth at The Masters. Zalatoris should be firmly in the mix at Quail Hollow Club come Sunday

Kurt Kitayama (+6000)

Kurt Kitayama is a go for me this week. There are very specific setups I like him for, and Quail Hollow fits my perception of who he is as a golfer. He is longer off the tee but struggles with accuracy sometimes, which is mitigated here. He specializes in long iron approach shots and can score on long par 4s and par 5s. His putting is not a strength, but he does avoid three-putting, rating out second over the last 24 rounds in avoidance.

Kitayama is a streaky player. Still, right now, his approach game has been hot, and his overall tee-to-green game is the most consistent it has been in the last 18 months. He seems to rise to the occasion when the competition gets tougher. Kitayama is almost always an auto-play for me in a no-cut event. The California native is a player who can have a nuclear hot round, and he has four chances to do it this week! Pray for a flat putting week and he is completely live to win the Wells Fargo Championship!
