Rocket Mortgage Classic 2024 Betting Picks

Maverick McNealy (+2800)

Maverick McNealy is coming into the Rocket Mortgage in great form. His last start resulted in a seventh-place finish at the RBC Canadian Open and saw him gaining strokes in every metric, which we had not seen him do in his previous eight starts.

Most notably, McNealy may have finally found his putter, one of his more lethal weapons, gaining four strokes to the field. Detroit Golf Club typically becomes a birdie fest and McNealy rates out fifth in the field for birdie-or-better rate and fifth in the field for scoring opportunities. He is also fifth in this field for strokes gained tee-to-green. If the putter is truly back, especially on Poa – his best surface – McNealy should win the Rocket Mortgage Classic handily.

Keith Mitchell (+3000)

Keith Mitchell is arguably one of the best drivers of a golf ball in the world. I think this is often overlooked. He averages 313 yards off the tee and is one of the most accurate drivers on Tour. His approach game is well recognized, though, and he rates out No. 2 in the field for strokes gained approach and No. 3 in the field for opportunities gained.

The achilles heel for Mitchell is and has always been his putting. It’s simply not good. The hope is that we see a near-flat week for him with the putter. He can absolutely win if that comes to fruition. Something promising on the putting front:  The 32-year-old is coming off of the RBC Canadian Open, where he gained 1.2 strokes to the field. For Mitchell, that is essentially the same as the aforementioned McNealy gaining four strokes on the same course. If the putter shows up here, we may very well see a McNealy/Mitchell final pairing on Sunday.

Sam Stevens (+7500)

Sam Stevens fits the mold of what I’m targeting this week. He is long and accurate off of the tee and very good with short iron approaches. The rest of his game can be suspect from time to time, but that hasn’t held him back from quietly having a great season. He has only missed four cuts this season and has three T20s. Most recently, he finished 14th at the RBC Canadian Open, gaining 8.5 strokes tee-to-green and only losing in one category, putting at -.07 strokes.

He is another player with the right skill set and form coming into the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He is volatile and the odds reflect the risk. Still, much like the other players profiled here, if he keeps the form and gets the putter rolling, he is very live to contend for the win.

Chandler Phillips (+10000)

Chandler Phillips seems to have been only a blip on the radar for most of the industry when he finished third at the Valspar Championship back in March. He quietly kept it rolling, and in his last two starts, he finished 12th at the Charles Schwab Challenege and 10th at the RBC Canadian Open.

Phillips is not a long hitter; as a matter of fact, he is 116th in driving distance in this field. However, his approach game is hard to deny. He rates out No. 11 for strokes gained in that category, and he is even better when you target the 150 yards-and-closer range. This is a short course, and most approaches will come from that range, even for Phillips. We are looking for players that stick it close and get a lot of birdie opportunities, and he is sixth in the field. He will convert those looks often if his putter stays in form. In his last two starts, he has gained an average of 4.2 strokes on the greens.

Phillips breaks my mold a bit, as I would prefer more distance, but I just can’t overlook his recent accuracy and putting form. He is absolutely in the conversation to break through and win the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
