Wyndham Championship 2024 Betting Picks

Sungjae Im (+1400)

Sungjae Im is my No. 1-rated golfer this week. He has been rounding into form as of late, with eight T12s in his last 10 starts. He’s been hanging around the top of the leaderboard for three months now, and it has been in much tougher fields on much more difficult courses. Im is deadly on a course that requires accuracy on approach and de-emphasizes distance. Sedgefield Country Club is one of the easiest courses we see all year and is most assuredly going to be a birdie-fest again this year. Im is No. 1 in this field for birdie-or-better rate over the last 24 rounds. He can definitely get it going.

There isn’t much to dislike about him this week. He is No. 5 in strokes gained tee-to-green, No. 3 in approach from 125-150, and No. 2 in par-4 scoring on 400-450 yard par-4s, of which this course has eight. We haven’t had the tournament favorite at this long of odds in quite some time, so I will happily take the value at the very top of the board this week.

Davis Thompson (+3500)

Davis Thompson is having a great season and is only a month removed from his win at the John Deere Classic. He had a little bit of a hiccup with his approach game while in Scotland, but outside of that, he has been rock solid in every aspect of the game.

The theme of the week at the Wyndham Championship is to be accurate on approach and make a lot of birdies. Thompson does that. He also is tops in this field in par-5 scoring, which on these shorter par-5s could translate into some eagle opportunities this week. It’s truly difficult to argue against a player who rates out as No. 1 in the field over the last 24 rounds in strokes gained from tee-to-green and also makes birdies in bunches while doing it. Odds of +3500 seem like an extreme value in this otherwise mixed bag of a field.

Chan Kim (+9000)

The modeling shock of the week for me is Chan Kim, who rates out No. 2 overall. Kim is someone who I have bet and rostered off and on all season, but he gives me fits as he is a boom-or-bust player. He seems to find himself in or around the top 10 or exiting the tournament early with a missed cut. That said, the upside of Kim at +9000 is really tough to overlook.

When he’s on, he is an elite approach player, and specifically, short irons and wedges are where he excels. The majority of approach shots at Sedgefield Country Club will be from inside 150 yards, giving Kim an edge on the majority of this field. Where he tends to falter is with the driver and the putter, though he rates out No. 6 in strokes gained tee-to-green. The putter is the part we will need him to find. He rates out in the bottom-third of this field in putting, but over his last three starts, he has not lost strokes in that regard. If he keeps the putter rolling, at least rolling in comparison to his baseline, the rest of his game sets up perfect here.
