The Sentry 2024 Betting Picks

Scottie Scheffler (+550)

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler is ready to kick off the 2024 season! Let’s hope he has figured out how to putt! Joking aside, Scheffler is a dominant force in golf, and I foresee that continuing in 2024. He is absolutely nails on approach, leading this field in shots gained and opportunities gained over the last 50 rounds. Kapalua Resort will demand elite iron and wedge play, and Scheffler is tops in regard to both. The biggest knock on him has been the putter, which had seemed to be more and more elusive for him as the 2023 season went on. The silver lining here is that he has not lost strokes putting at Kapalua in either of his starts. He has very short odds, but course history and elite ball striking make him one of my favorite outright bets this week at The Sentry.

Ludvig Aberg (+1400)

Next up on our PGA betting card is a man who, at this point, should need no introduction. Quite possibly the hottest commodity on the Tour right now, Ludvig Aberg comes in at +14000 odds. We are witnessing a legend in the making. Aberg has played excellent golf, winning his last outing at The RSM Classic in November and not finishing outside of the top 15 in his prior four starts. The wrap-around season showed that there isn’t one type of course he’s good at; he’s just good at all of them! I was a little hesitant to buy into the hype at first, but he has proven he is ready for the show.

His approach game has improved rapidly over the last four months, and that was the piece that I felt would hold him back. He is deadly accurate with long irons and wedges, which is exactly what you need at The Sentry. He gains off the tee and has massive distance to complement the iron play. There really isn’t any reason why he can’t start 2024 off with a win, and I won’t miss the chance to collect!

Sahith Theegala (+5500)

Sahith Theegala is a player with whom I struggle to pick the right spots. He has all of the tools; it’s just a matter of him putting them together and keeping them together for four consecutive rounds. Kapalua strikes me as a course that may play to his strengths. It is wide open and has massive greens, making it easier for him to focus on hitting solid approaches and getting the short stick in his hand looking for birdies and eagles. He can score with the best of them and rarely gives strokes back on the green. Three-putt avoidance will matter here, and Theegala leads the field in avoiding the dreaded three wiggle. Again, his game is reliant on keeping it all together for four rounds, so the +5500 number does seem appropriate for the volatility. Still, he is definitely another younger player to watch, and I think we will be seeing a lot of Theegala in 2024!

Luke List (+10000)

Luke List is the anti-Scheffler when it comes to putting. List figured it out towards the back half of 2023 and seems to have found his water level with the putter. He tends to be right around flat in the strokes gained department, but that is actually all you need out of him, as the rest of his game has always been borderline elite. List has not missed a cut dating all the way back to the US Open and has one win since then at the Sanderson Farms. The ball striking tee-to-green has been excellent over the last 50 rounds, and his best proximities are +200 and within wedge range, which is precisely how Kapalua sets up. He finished T11 last year at The Sentry, gaining almost six strokes tee to green. The putter hadn’t quite been found yet, which kept him out of the mix. With a much more competent putter this year, I expect List to be in contention over the weekend.
