FedEx Cup Player of the Week: Scottie Scheffler (+600 Top Scorer, +400 Top USA Scorer)
The best player on the planet, at odds deeper than we got most of the season in full-field events? I’m in. I love Scottie Scheffler to be the top overall point scorer. He will almost assuredly play all sessions this week, giving him an edge over some of the other members of both squads. Scheffler has been playing out-of-this-world golf all season. It’s hard to argue against him being the best player on the planet after his Olympic Gold Medal victory and wrapping the FedEx Cup with a win at the TOUR Championship.
Scheffler has one of the most deadly iron games on tour, and The Royal Montreal Golf Club will require that of its players. The greens are smaller than the Tour average and will be tricky from varying approach distances. However, Scheffler is No. 2 in overall approach and No. 1 for opportunities gained, which means he’s sticking it close. The off-the-tee game has been rock solid this year, averaging 2.2 strokes gained at an average driving distance of 303 yards. Distance isn’t mandatory here, but it certainly won’t hurt to be longer than most and hit short irons in from the fairway.
His around-the-green play may be the only part of his game that can be suspect. The up-and-down game and just the putter in general have given him some fits this season. He has been markedly better in both areas over the last few months, though, to the point that he has risen to more of a middle-of-the-field ranking.
That said, Scheffler is playing golf like we haven’t seen in over 20 years and there is no reason to get cute and start fading him now. Go get your bets in!
