I have to be honest. When I looked at the Week 8 NFL schedule, I thought it would be a heap of bad games. Week 8 was legitimately the most fun I’ve had watching football all season. There was a metric ton of scoring, a game-winning Hail Mary as time expired and National Tight End Day, all with open windows to let in the cool fall breeze. Magnificent!
Most leagues are roughly a month out from the start of the fantasy football playoffs, which likely means the trade deadline could be approaching in your league. It’s a good idea to check your league settings ahead of Week 9 so you get all your top trade targets for success down the stretch. With that in mind, let’s make some trades.
Week 9 Fantasy Football Trade Targets (2024)
Trade For: Evan Engram (TE, Jacksonville Jaguars)
The Jaguars’ WR room was decimated in Week 8. Christian Kirk fractured his clavicle, ending his season. My sweet, sweet Brian Thomas Jr. has what’s been reported as a chest or rib injury. Gabriel Davis is also working through a shoulder injury again.
TE Evan Engram is a promising fantasy football trade target, especially considering all those recent injuries. He could be the go-to target for at least Week 9 and possibly longer. Despite his modest performance on National TE Day, Engram’s potential is undeniable. He finished with five targets, four catches for 36 yards and a touchdown, hinting at what he could achieve with more opportunities.
Engram was a target hog last year after injuries to Zay Jones (multiple) and Christian Kirk (multiple). From Week 12 forward last season, Engram saw double-digit targets in three games. He ultimately tallied 61 targets, 50 receptions and four touchdowns in that span. He was an absolute monster for fantasy football.
Few players will emerge with the opportunity that Engram will over the back half of this season. The Jaguars’ schedule over the next month includes games against the Eagles, Vikings, Lions and Texans. While these teams are some of the worst matchups for the TE position in fantasy football, the volume should reel Engram to stardom, making him a top trade target.
Trade Away: All of Them (WRs, Green Bay Packers)
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is freaking awesome. The Packers are 6-2 in the toughest division in football and strong contenders to play deep into January. That said, it’s not what we care about for fantasy football. We hope to see a pattern and have some level of predictability as to who will score fantasy points. For the Packers’ wide receiver room, it’s tough, to put it mildly.
Over the last month, the Packers have been 4-0, primarily due to Jordan Love, the Steve Nash of the NFL. He’s spreading the ball around, and it’s working. In Week 5, the Packers WRs with over five targets were Dontayvion Wicks and Jayden Reed. During Week 6, it was only Reed. In Week 7, it was Wicks again, along with Romeo Doubs. For Week 8, Doubs and Christian Watson were the duo with over five targets amongst Packers WRs. Tight end Tucker Kraft also led the team in yards twice in that same span.
I firmly believe that volatility helps win fantasy football championships, but that has to balance out with a bit of reliability. Right now, the Packers’ WR room can’t be trusted week to week for fantasy purposes. It’s Week 9, and it’s not getting any better; get out now.
Trade Radar: Ricky Pearsall (WR, San Francisco 49ers)
San Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall is one of the best stories in all of football for 2024. After being shot in the chest during a robbery attempt on Aug. 31, 50 days later, Pearsall took the field for the 49ers in Week 7.
With Brandon Aiyuk lost for the season to a torn ACL, Pearsall has a massive opportunity to carve out a fundamental role in this 49ers offense, even though the box score hasn’t shown that yet. In Week 7, Pearsall actually had the most routes run and snaps amongst 49ers wide receivers, as well as an 18% target share. In Week 8, Pearsall tallied 77 total yards on five touches.
While Pearsall’s involvement in the 49ers’ offense hasn’t yet translated to significant fantasy points, it’s not time to give up on him. The potential return of all-world running back Christian McCaffrey could be a game-changer for this offense. His presence could elevate the entire squad, creating more opportunities for Pearsall to shine.
