John Deere Classic 2024 Betting Picks
Sepp Straka (+1600)
In this field it would be hard to argue against Sepp Straka as having the best form this season. He has been playing great golf and knocking at the door all year. We get him in a much lesser field where he is truly a tier above everyone, and I think +1600 is a bit of a value. In his last eight starts, he has 4 T10s, which include three T5s.
He has been absolutely nails on approach all year, rating out third in this field. His opportunities gained are also in the top 10. He is getting a lot of looks at birdie, and he is converting those more often than 95% of this field. I love Straka here. He is the defending champion, and I see no reason he couldn’t go back to back at TPC Deere Run!
Aaron Rai (+2000)
Speaking of hot hands, Aaron Rai has been on fire recently. He rates out No. 1 overall for me this week. Much like Straka, Rai has been there every week knocking at the door. He is coming off of a T2 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, where he gained 6.6 strokes tee-to-green and 4.8 strokes putting. He is dialed in, and with a similar setup again this week and a lesser field, he is very live to win.
Rai finished ninth here last year and gained 6.7 strokes on approach and 4.3 strokes putting. Over the last 24 rounds, he leads this field in strokes gained from tee to green. We just need that putter to stay hot for one more week, and he could steal this from Straka.
Nick Dunlap (+3500)
It’s been a long season, but let us not forget that Nick Dunlap won The American Express back in January. He had a strong performance at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, finishing T10 and gaining 8.3 strokes to the field. In particular, his approach game has been bordering on elite all season. He gained 5.1 strokes last week and rates out 13th in this field overall.
The thing I love most about Dunlap is he makes a ton of birdies. He rates out fifth in the field for birdie-or-better rate. You will need players who can go low, and Dunlap is that golfer. He has been close to getting a second win this season and doing it in much stronger fields. I like the upside with him at the John Deere Classic.
Luke Clanton (+4500)
If you haven’t heard of Luke Clanton, then you should get acquainted. Clanton is a junior at Florida State University and has made some serious noise in his two starts this season. He finished 41st at the US Open and T10 last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, firing a -14 for the tournament.
Clanton’s college career is filled with pages of accolades and awards, not the least of which is the Florida State single-season record for the lowest scoring average at 69.33. He also managed to win three consecutive NCAA tournaments in a row this past season.
This kid is the real deal. He goes low, and he isn’t phased by the big boys. He gained 8.3 strokes to the field last week and was only held back by his around-the-green game. At TPC Deere Run, with big greens and easy sight lines, I love for Canton to come in and introduce himself in grand fashion with a win. Everyone is looking at Michael Thornbjornsen, but Canton may be the young gun to watch!
